Shelving with Modular Drawers

One hundred and twenty-one models whose names look like noise. They are not. Every segment of a Rousseau part number is a decision you made, and the same decoder reads the R-Series cabinets too. This guide breaks it down, explains how a drawer bank and a set of shelf levels share one frame, and settles when drawers in shelving beat a drawer cabinet.

Section One

What this guide adds

Two existing guides come at this product from either side and neither one lands on it.

Our Cabinets and Modular Drawer Storage guide covers drawers inside a closed cabinet, and it treats shelving as the thing drawers replace. Our Industrial Shelving guide covers per-shelf ratings, fire code and anchoring, and gives modular drawer shelving about eighty-five words. Neither owns the hybrid: an open shelving frame with a bank of drawers built into it.

That is what this category is, and it is a genuinely different specification problem. You are buying two capacity systems in one envelope, described by one part number, and the part number is the only place the whole configuration is written down.

The asset

A decoder that reads both lines

Every segment of R5SEC-754809A is a decision. And because the shelving and the R-Series cabinets share the same width and depth letters, one decoder reads both catalogues. Nothing on the site explains any of it.

The arithmetic

Bank height plus shelf levels

A 75 in. frame with a 48 in. drawer bank has less room left for shelves than the same frame with an 18 in. bank. The part number encodes both numbers, so you can read the trade before you open the listing.

The decision

Same drawers, two frames

These are the same 400 lb drawers as the R-Series cabinets. The frame is what differs, and what the frame gains and gives up is a real list. Section Ten has it.

What this guide will not re-argue

The case for drawers over shelves for high-count small parts is made in both existing guides and is not repeated. Nor is the frequently quoted claim that modular drawers save around seventy percent of the floor space of shelving: our cabinets guide already flags that as a vendor claim rather than measured data, and it is not treated as fact here either.

Section Two

What the product actually is

Not cabinets on shelves. Drawers hooked into a shelving frame, and the frame is the interesting part.

Every product listing in this category carries the same paragraph, and it is the most useful sentence on the site:

Published on 97 of the 121 listings in these words

"The drawers are installed in Rousseau Spider Shelving but can also be installed in over 35 brands of shelving systems. This enables you to keep existing materials, easy and quick hook-on assembly for most shelving brands. Instead of building an addition onto your building, choose high-density storage; optimize your investments and get more room."

A further 23 listings carry the same claim in reworded form, and one carries it not at all. The substance is consistent across the range; the wording is not.

Two things follow from that, and both matter at quote stage.

The drawers are the product. The frame is a host.

What you are buying is a Rousseau drawer bank, and it happens to arrive fitted into Rousseau's own Spider shelving. The published claim is that the same drawers hook into more than thirty-five other shelving brands. If you already have industrial shelving on the floor, the most common real-world entry point is not a whole new unit at all. It is a drawer bank retrofitted into a frame you own, and that is a conversation to have before you price a complete unit.

None of the 121 listings sells a drawer bank on its own, and none names the thirty-five brands. So this is a question for a quote rather than something you can configure on the site.

What it is called depends where you look

The site uses several names for the same thing, which is worth knowing when you are searching or reading a quote. The category heading calls it Rousseau Modular Drawer Shelving. The product body calls it the Rousseau Modular Drawer Shelving System. The frame itself is named as Rousseau Spider Shelving. And the manufacturer field on every product page files the whole category under Rousseau Modular Drawer Cabinets and Carts, which is the cabinet node rather than a shelving one.

Open or closed shelving? The site says both

The category page describes the product as combining "open shelving with high-capacity drawers," and the series pages repeat that it "combines open shelving with smooth-sliding drawers." Every one of the 121 product listings says the opposite, describing the unit as "closed shelving with N shelves," or "add-on closed shelving." That distinction is not cosmetic: it changes solid-shelf area, which changes the sprinkler question in Section Twelve, and it changes whether the back and sides are panelled. Confirm which you are getting in writing.

Section Three

Decoding the part number

Eight segments, every one of them a decision, and the same key opens the R-Series catalogue.

Rousseau part numbers in this category look opaque and are not. The site publishes no key anywhere: not on the category page, not on the six series pages, not on any of the 121 listings. The decoder below is derived from the published dimension and configuration data across all of them.

The second letter names the frame

At least seven values appear across the Rousseau catalogue, and this letter is what tells you which product family you are looking at. The three that matter for this decision are the first three:

The letters are a shared alphabet, not a shared mapping

It is tempting to assume the width and depth letters carry across from shelving to cabinets. Some do and some do not, and one of them means something completely different. This is the most dangerous thing in the whole scheme, because a part number that decodes cleanly under the wrong key gives you a plausible answer that is wrong.

So R5SEC and R5AEC genuinely are a 36 by 18 in. shelving unit and a 36 by 18 in. cabinet, the same footprint in two frames. But R5SGE is a 42 by 24 in. shelving unit while R5AHG is a 48 by 27 in. cabinet, and no cabinet is 42 in. wide. Decode within one line at a time, and confirm the dimensions on the listing rather than trusting the letters across a boundary. Section Ten works through which frame to buy.

The bank code and the published bank height are not always the same number

Read the two digits as a code rather than a measurement. Codes run 18, 36 and 48. Published bank heights run 18, 30, 36 and 48 in., and the extra value is not an error.

The 4809 family is where they diverge. Its code says 48, but all twenty-two of those SKUs publish a 30 in. drawer bank plus "1 front access roll-out shelf," which takes the balance of the 48 in. So read 4809 as "48 inches of bank space, part of it given to a roll-out shelf" rather than as 48 inches of drawers. If you are counting drawer inches, that distinction costs you eighteen of them.

One further listing, R5SGE-754801A, publishes an 8 in. bank containing eight 6 in. drawers, which is not possible and which every sibling model publishes as 48 in. It is the only listing in the category whose bank height falls outside 18, 30, 36 and 48, and it reads as a dropped digit.

The height segment has a smaller version of the same problem. Two 42 by 24 in. listings, R5SGE-874805 and R5SGE-874809, publish an overall height of 84 in. against an 87 code, where every other 87-coded listing in the category publishes 87 in. Three inches will not usually change a decision, but it will change a clearance calculation, so read the published height rather than the code when the two disagree.

Section Four

The six configurations

Three widths, two depths, and published guidance that is unusually good.

The category divides into six series, one for each width and depth pairing. Every series carries twenty SKUs, except 36 by 24 in., which carries twenty-one.

What the site says about choosing

The published selection guidance here is better than most categories manage, and it is worth quoting rather than paraphrasing.

On width: "the three widths determine the inside usable width of each drawer and the overall footprint of the unit in the installation space. The 36 in. wide configuration is the most compact and suits tight shop or tool room positions. The 42 in. and 48 in. configurations provide more interior drawer width for larger parts or components that need more lateral space."

On depth: "the depth determines how far each drawer extends into the unit from the front face. An 18 in. depth suits most standard tool room and shop positions. A 24 in. depth provides additional storage volume per drawer for longer parts, larger components, or applications where more parts need to fit in fewer drawers."

On drawer height: "individual drawer heights can be varied to accommodate the height of the parts being stored. Shallower drawers suit flat tooling, inserts, and gauges. Deeper drawers suit taller parts, fittings, and components."

Depth is the decision with the most consequences

Width changes drawer area and footprint, and that is roughly all it changes. Depth changes four things at once: drawer volume, the published per-shelf rating (Section Seven), how far a loaded drawer projects into the aisle when extended (Section Eleven), and whether the unit falls inside or outside the four to one stability rule. An 18 in. deep unit at either available height exceeds four to one; a 24 in. deep unit at either height does not. Decide depth deliberately rather than defaulting to it.

Section Five

Reading the hybrid: bank against shelves

One frame, two storage systems, and a trade-off the listings never state directly.

This is what makes the category different from either a cabinet or a shelving unit, and it is the arithmetic no page on the site performs for you.

Every unit is a fixed overall height, either 75 in. or 87 in. Inside that height sits a drawer bank of 18, 36 or 48 in., and whatever height remains is given to shelf levels. Both numbers are in the part number. So you can read the trade straight off the model string.

Which way to trade

The honest answer is that this depends entirely on what the shelf levels would otherwise hold, and it is worth thinking about explicitly rather than taking whatever the pre-configured model happens to give you.

Trade toward the drawer bank. Shelf levels holding small parts in bins are the case both existing guides say drawers win, and the search-time saving is the whole argument.
Bulk, boxed stock, overflow, anything large
Keep the shelf levels. A drawer is the wrong container for a case of stock, and the per-shelf ratings here are substantial.
A mix, which is most tool rooms
This is exactly what the hybrid is for. Put the frequently picked small items in the bank at comfortable working height, and the bulk above it.
You are not sure yet
Shelves adjust at every inch and the modular system is designed to be reconfigured. Starting with a smaller bank is the more reversible choice.
Put the bank where hands are

A drawer bank at floor level makes people crouch, and a bank at the top of an 87 in. frame makes them reach over their heads to pull 400 lb. The drawers are the thing that gets touched most, so they belong in the comfortable band. That also matters for Section Eleven: a loaded drawer extended high up is the worst case for stability, and a bank low in the frame is the best case.

The roll-out shelf variant

Twenty-two SKUs, the 4809 family, publish "1 front access roll-out shelf" alongside a 30 in. drawer bank. That is a third thing in the same frame: not a drawer, not a fixed shelf, but a shelf that pulls forward. It suits items too large or awkward for a drawer that still need to come out to the aisle to be reached. Worth knowing it exists, because the part number does not obviously announce it.

Section Six

400 lb per drawer, and what it does not mean

The headline figure, published almost everywhere, and three things it is not.

Every entry point to this category publishes the same number. The category page says "each drawer carries 400 pounds and extends fully on precision slides for complete, unobstructed access to all stored items." The category FAQ says Rousseau drawers are "engineered for heavy, dense items with 400 lb capacities, full-extension slides, and customizable configurations." And 118 of the 121 product listings state "each drawer is rated at 400 pounds."

That figure is consistent and it is real. Here is what it does not tell you.

Not a unit total

You cannot multiply it

No listing publishes a total unit capacity. Ten drawers at 400 lb is not a 4,000 lb unit, because the frame, the uprights and the floor govern, not the sum of the drawers. And the shelf levels carry their own separate rating on top. Ask for the total in writing.

Not comparable to a shelf

Different measurement entirely

A drawer rating includes the slide mechanism and applies with the drawer fully extended, which is the worst case for the unit. A shelf rating is a distributed load on a supported surface. Setting 400 lb per drawer against 800 lb per shelf compares two different things.

Not a slide specification

The slide is never described

"Precision slides" is the whole of it, and even that phrase is on the category and series pages rather than the listings. No product listing contains the word slide at all, and nothing anywhere names a slide type, a bearing arrangement, a brand or a separate rating. Section Fourteen covers what to ask.

100 percent extension

This one is published even more consistently than the capacity: "100% drawer extension" appears on all 121 listings, and the category FAQ states that "Rousseau drawers extend to 100%, giving you complete access to every stored item without obstruction."

Full extension is the point of the product. It is what turns a deep drawer from a place things get lost into a tray that presents its whole contents. It is also what makes the 400 lb rating a meaningful one, because the load is rated in the extended position rather than sitting supported inside the frame.

Three listings omit the capacity figure

R5SEE-873601, R5SHC-754809A and R5SHC-874805A do not publish the 400 lb rating that the other 118 do, and one further SKU publishes a drawer bank with no drawer height at all. There is no reason to think those models differ, but if one of them is on your quote, get the rating confirmed rather than inferred from its siblings.

The lifetime warranty, and what it covers

Almost every listing states, usually two or three times over in slightly different words, that "a lifetime warranty covers the Rousseau drawer rolling mechanism." Read the scope: it is the rolling mechanism, not the unit. That is a meaningful warranty on the part that does the work and wears, and it is the same warranty the R-Series cabinets carry on the same mechanism. No duration or terms are published for anything else beyond the general statement that purchases include the manufacturer's factory warranty.

Section Seven

Per-shelf capacity, and the anomaly

Published on every listing, constant within a series, and it does not behave the way you would expect.

Alongside the drawer rating, every listing publishes a per-shelf rating for the shelf levels, and it is fixed within each series. This is the number that governs the non-drawer half of the unit, and it is easy to miss because the 400 lb drawer figure gets all the attention.

These figures do not move in one direction

The narrowest, shallowest unit is rated highest at 800 lb. Going deeper at 36 in. wide drops the rating to 625. Going deeper at 48 in. wide raises it from 575 to 600. Two series with different depths are rated identically at 650. You cannot infer a shelf rating from the size of the unit, and a buyer who assumes a bigger unit carries more per shelf will be wrong in three of the six cases. No explanation is published for any of it. Read the figure for the exact series you are buying.

What a per-shelf rating means here

The same rules apply as anywhere else in shelving, and our Industrial Shelving guide covers them properly. The short version: the rating is for a load spread evenly across the shelf, a point load concentrated on a small area is a different and harsher case, and the sum of the shelf ratings is not the unit's total capacity. That last point is doubly true here, because the drawer bank is loading the same frame at the same time.

Shelves are published as "adjustable at every inch" on every listing, which is finer adjustment than most industrial shelving offers and genuinely useful when you are fitting shelf levels around a fixed drawer bank.

Ask for the number nobody publishes

The one figure that would let you plan properly is the total unit capacity: drawers plus shelves plus frame, and what that puts on the floor. It is not published anywhere in the category. On an 87 in. unit with a 48 in. bank and several loaded shelf levels, this is not a trivial number, and it is what a mezzanine or an upper floor would need to know.

Section Eight

Drawer heights, and the ceiling at eight inches

Four heights in this line against ten in the cabinet line, and that gap decides some purchases outright.

The drawer heights published across the shelving category are 3, 4 and 6 inches on the product listings, with an 8 in. drawer asserted on two of the six series pages. That is the entire range.

The 8 inch drawer is claimed but never specified at model level

No product listing in this category publishes an 8 in. drawer height. The only drawer heights that appear on any of the 121 listings are 3, 4 and 6 in., and five listings publish no drawer heights at all. The 8 in. drawer exists as a statement on two series pages and in their model tables, not as a published specification on the models themselves. If you are buying for an item that needs the 8 in. drawer, get the drawer mix confirmed in writing for the specific model rather than relying on either page.

The R-Series cabinets, holding the same 400 lb drawers, publish a considerably wider range on the 36 in. wide page alone: 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12 and 14 inches.

This is the single biggest difference between the two lines

If any part of your inventory needs a drawer taller than 8 in., the shelving line cannot hold it and no configuration choice changes that. The frame is not the constraint; the pre-configured drawer mixes are. Measure your tallest item that belongs in a drawer before you go any further, because it may decide the whole question in Section Ten for you.

The reverse also holds. If everything fits in 3 to 8 in. drawers, the shelving line's narrower range costs you nothing at all, and you get shelf levels the cabinets do not offer.

Compartments per drawer

Most listings publish how many compartments a drawer of a given height divides into, which is a useful proxy for how the interior is organised. The figures are constant within a series:

The 8 in. column comes from a series table rather than from a product listing, for the reason set out above. Two things to read off the rest. A 3 in. and a 4 in. drawer divide into the same number of compartments in every series, so the taller drawer buys depth per compartment rather than more of them. And a 6 in. drawer divides into far fewer compartments than a 4 in. one, roughly a third as many in most series, which tells you the deeper drawers are set up for fewer, larger items rather than more small ones.

One published figure does not follow the pattern

The 42 by 18 in. series publishes 18 compartments in its 3 in. and 4 in. drawers, fewer than the narrower 36 by 18 in. series, which publishes 24, and well below the 48 by 18 in. series at 32. A wider drawer dividing into fewer compartments than a narrower one is not what you would expect. It may be a different published divider layout rather than an error, but if compartment count matters to your tool control programme, confirm it for the exact model.

Dividers and inserts

The category page lists "dividers, partitions, foam inserts, and labeling systems" as interior organization options. Most product listings do mention that drawer dividers and partitions are available, but only in general terms. None of the 121 listings offers any of the four as a purchasable item, foam and labelling are not mentioned at model level at all, and every listing returns no related accessories. The compartment counts above are the only interior specification published per model. Treat dividers and foam as things to specify on a quote, not things you can configure on the site.

Section Nine

Starter and add-on

The same arithmetic as any shelving run, marked by a single letter.

Roughly half the catalogue carries a trailing A. That is an add-on unit, which shares uprights with the unit beside it. Without the A it is a starter, freestanding with its own uprights on both sides.

Worked: a five-bay run of 36 by 18 in. units is one R5SEC starter and four R5SEC add-ons. Ordering five starters buys four sets of uprights you do not need and makes the run longer.

What has to match across a run

Plan the run, then read off the part numbers

Because the part number encodes the bank height, a planned run reads as a simple list once you have decided where the drawers go. Fix the series and the frame height, then choose a bank per bay, then add the A to everything after the first. That is the whole order.

Check the model on the quote, not the URL

Several product URLs do not match the model they describe. Six listings open their description by naming a different model than the one the page is selling: three starters name their own add-on version, and three name an unrelated sibling. In all six cases the address is wrong in the same way. And one add-on, R5SGC-754809A, describes itself as plain closed shelving rather than add-on closed shelving despite the A suffix. Page headings vary too, with several patterns in use including one that runs "Add-On" straight into the next word. None of this changes what ships, but it means you should trust the manufacturer part number field rather than the address bar or the heading, and read the model string on the purchase order character by character against the configuration you agreed.

Section Ten

Shelving or a cabinet

The same drawers, the same rating, the same warranty. Everything that differs is the frame.

The R-Series category links straight to this one under the heading "Need a combination of shelving and modular drawers?" That is the right framing. These are not competing products so much as the same drawers in two different housings, and the published evidence supports that: both lines publish 400 lb per drawer, both publish 100 percent extension, both carry the same lifetime warranty on the same rolling mechanism, and both use the same width and depth letters in their part numbers.

What the frame changes is substantial, and it goes in both directions.

Choose the shelving when

You need both storage types in one footprint

  • Your inventory is a genuine mix of small parts and bulk, and you want both against one wall
  • Everything that belongs in a drawer fits within 8 in.
  • You already own industrial shelving and want to convert part of it rather than replace it
  • You want the option to reconfigure back toward shelves later
  • Security is handled by the room rather than by the unit

Choose the cabinet when

The drawers need to be secure or unusual

  • Anything needs a drawer taller than 8 in.
  • The contents need locking. This is the clearest single dividing line
  • You want the published option that prevents several drawers opening at once
  • The unit has to be moved by forklift or pallet jack
  • You need liners, foam inserts or a worktop on top
  • You need a width outside 36 to 48 in., or a multi-drawer cabinet built for drawer count
Locking is the decision that most often settles it

The category page says "optional locking is available" and its FAQ says "locking options are available." Most listings do mention locking, but only in the vaguest possible prose: "the systems often have locking mechanisms that help secure valuable tools or sensitive materials." Not one of the 121 listings names a lock type, a cylinder, a keying arrangement, or offers a lock you can select and buy. Colour is the only configurable option on a shelving listing. The R-Series cabinets publish theirs in detail, price them, and include a key lock as standard. If the tooling in these drawers needs to be locked up, either get the shelving locking specification in writing before you order, or buy the frame that publishes one.

Section Eleven

Stability, and the four to one rule

A published rule, two published heights, two published depths, and a clean answer.

Shelving works to a height-to-depth limit of four to one. Above that ratio a freestanding unit needs anchoring. Our Industrial Shelving guide covers the rule in full; what follows is applying it to this category, which nothing on the site does.

There are only four combinations, because the line offers two heights and two depths:

Both heights, all sixty of them. Every 24 in. deep unit is inside it at both heights. That is a clean split and it is worth knowing before you choose a depth, because it turns anchoring from an afterthought into part of the specification.

The good news is that the category answers this. All 121 listings publish "floor anchor plate with hardware" as part of the unit. The anchoring provision is included; what is not published is the anchor specification, the bolt size or embedment, or any seismic rating.

The drawer makes it worse, and the rule does not account for it

The four to one ratio is a rule about a static shelving unit. It assumes the load sits on shelves inside the footprint. A drawer bank does something a shelf never does: it takes up to 400 lb and moves it fully outside the frame every time someone opens it.

That is the whole design intent, and it is also an overturning moment applied at the front of a unit that may already be over the ratio. Two things follow:

Note also that bolting units together along a run effectively increases the depth the ratio is measured against, which is why a back-to-back pair behaves quite differently from a single unit. If you are planning a back-to-back layout, raise it at quote stage.

Two things that do not fix the ratio

Footplates do not change the height-to-depth calculation, and neither does where you put the shelf levels. A low drawer bank keeps the mass low, which is good practice and worth doing, but it does not bring a 4.83 ratio inside the limit. Anchor it.

Section Twelve

Drawers and sprinklers

A drawer is the most solid horizontal surface you can put in a shelving frame, and that has fire code consequences.

Solid shelving obstructs sprinkler water reaching the levels below it. That is why open wire and grid shelving exists, and why our Industrial Shelving guide treats solid shelving as one of the largest hidden costs in a shelving decision.

A drawer bank is that problem in its strongest form. A drawer is not merely a solid shelf; it is a solid shelf with sides and a load inside it, stacked several deep. Neither the category page nor any of the 121 listings mentions sprinklers, fire code, solid shelf area, or in-rack sprinkler provision.

Nothing here is sprinkler-neutral

This is not a reason to avoid the product. It is a reason to involve whoever is responsible for your fire protection before the units are placed, rather than after. The relevant questions are how much solid horizontal area you are adding, at what height, and whether the room's sprinkler design assumed open shelving. A drawer bank low in the frame with open shelf levels above it is a very different case from a tall run of drawers.

Where the dimensions help

One piece of good news is that this category sits comfortably inside the common shelving definition used in fire code, which turns on shelves up to and including 30 in. deep separated by aisles at least 30 in. wide. At 18 in. and 24 in., every unit in this category is well inside the depth limit. A back-to-back pair at 24 in. each comes to 48 in., also inside the 60 in. total that applies to back-to-back rows.

So the dimensional tests are not the problem here. The solid-surface question is, and it is the one to raise.

The open versus closed question returns

Section Two flagged that the category page calls this open shelving and every product listing calls it closed shelving. That contradiction matters most here, because it is precisely a question about solid surfaces. Get it resolved in writing before your fire protection engineer looks at the layout, because the answer changes what they are assessing.

Section Thirteen

What the category page claims that no listing supports

Five features described at category level that do not appear on any of the 121 models.

The category page is well written and its selection guidance is genuinely useful. It also describes a product that is broader than what the catalogue actually sells. These five gaps are worth knowing before you build expectations on them.

Rousseau is a serious manufacturer and these features may well all exist. What is established is that they are not published at model level, which means you cannot verify them from a product page and cannot hold a listing to them. Every one of them is a reasonable thing to request in writing on a quote, and a supplier who can answer all five has the factory documentation to hand.

Two published exclusivity claims that conflict

Separately, two series pages each claim to be the only place you can get something. The 48 by 24 in. page states that its 8 in. drawer configuration is "one configuration found nowhere else in the lineup" and that the 8 in. height "is the deepest available in any standard pre-configured Rousseau modular drawer shelving unit on this site and is only available in this configuration at 87 in. high." The 36 by 24 in. page states that its own 8 in. layout is "the only configuration across the Rousseau modular drawer shelving lineup listed with 8 in. drawer height."

Both cannot be right, and both series do carry an 8 in. configuration. The 36 by 24 in. page adds a second error, describing its layouts as "available in both 75 in. and 87 in. heights" when its 8 in. model exists only at 75 in. If the 8 in. drawer is what you are after, ask which models actually carry it rather than trusting either page, and note that only a handful do.

One model has no product page of its own

The 36 by 24 in. series table lists twenty-one models but links to twenty. The missing one, R5SEE-754811, is reachable only through a query-string address rather than a normal product URL, and it is the only model in the entire category carrying configuration variant 11. It is also the 36 by 24 in. series' 8 in. drawer model. If it is the configuration you want, expect to order it by part number rather than by finding the page.

Section Fourteen

What is not published

What every listing gives you, and the twelve things none of them do.

Section Fifteen

A worked selection

One tool crib, six decisions, in the order they have to be made.

A machine shop tool crib stores cutting tools, inserts, collets, gauges and hand tools, plus boxed consumables and some spare fixturing. The tallest item that belongs in a drawer is a 5 in. tall collet chuck holder. The heaviest single drawer load will be around 250 lb of tooling. There is a 12 ft run of wall available, ceiling is 12 ft clear, and the crib is a locked room. There is existing 18 in. deep industrial shelving on that wall already.

Step one: does anything need a drawer taller than 8 inches

The tallest item is 5 in. A 6 in. drawer clears it. Nothing needs the R-Series drawer range, so the shelving line stays in play. Had that collet holder been 10 in. tall, Section Eight would have ended the process here.

Step two: does anything need locking

The crib is a locked room, so access is controlled at the door. The single clearest reason to choose a cabinet does not apply. If this were an open shop floor with expensive tooling, the answer would flip, because no listing in this category specifies or sells a lock.

Step three: check the existing shelving first

There is already 18 in. deep shelving on that wall. The published claim on every listing is that these drawers hook into more than thirty-five brands of shelving. Before pricing complete units, ask whether drawer banks can be fitted to what is already there. That is not something the site can quote, and it is the question most likely to change the size of the order.

Step four: depth, which decides more than it looks

Assume the retrofit is not viable and complete units are needed. The existing shelving is 18 in. deep, so 18 in. matches the run. But Section Eleven applies: every 18 in. deep unit in this category exceeds the four to one ratio at both heights and must be anchored. The anchor plate and hardware are included, so this is a matter of doing the work rather than buying anything extra. If the floor cannot be drilled, 24 in. deep is the configuration that does not need it, at the cost of six more inches of aisle intrusion.

Taking 18 in.: that gives the R5SEC series at 36 in. wide, or R5SGC at 42 in., or R5SHC at 48 in.

Step five: width and how many bays

A 12 ft run is 144 in. Three 48 in. bays fit exactly, and four 36 in. bays come to 144 in. as well. The 48 in. series publishes the highest compartment counts in the category, 32 in a 4 in. drawer against 24 in the 36 in. series, which suits a crib holding many small distinct items. It also publishes the lowest per-shelf rating in the category at 575 lb, which matters for the boxed consumables above the bank.

Step six: the bank and shelf split, bay by bay

This is where the hybrid earns its keep, and Section Nine noted the useful fact that bank height can vary bay to bay within a series and frame height. So:

Choose 87 in. over 75 in. if the 12 ft ceiling allows and the top shelf is still reachable, since the extra twelve inches generally buys another shelf level at the same bank height. Note that 87 in. on 18 in. depth is the worst ratio in the line, so the anchoring in step four is not optional.

What to put on the RFQ for this job

Total unit capacity and what it puts on the floor. The anchor bolt specification, since all three bays need anchoring. Whether more than one drawer can be extended at once. Whether dividers and labelling can be supplied, since no listing offers them. Whether the existing shelving can take drawer banks. And whether the units are open or closed shelving, because the fire protection review will need to know.

Section Sixteen

Common and costly mistakes

Ten failures, in rough order of what they cost.

  1. Not checking the 8 inch drawer ceiling first. This line publishes 3, 4, 6 and 8 in. drawers only. Anything taller needs the R-Series, whose range runs to 14 in. Measure the tallest item that belongs in a drawer before anything else.
  2. Assuming the drawers lock. The category page says locking is available. Most listings mention locking only in the vaguest prose, and not one names a lock type or offers a lock to buy. If the contents need securing, get it in writing or buy the cabinet line that specifies and prices it.
  3. Multiplying 400 lb by the drawer count. No total unit capacity is published anywhere, and the drawers and the shelf levels load the same frame. The sum of the drawers is not what the unit holds.
  4. Not anchoring the 18 inch deep units. Every one of them exceeds the four to one height-to-depth ratio at both available heights. The anchor plate and hardware are included on every unit, so this is work to do rather than a part to buy.
  5. Ignoring what a drawer does to stability. A shelf holds its load inside the footprint. A drawer takes up to 400 lb fully outside it, by design, on a frame that may already be over the ratio. Ask whether more than one drawer can be extended at once.
  6. Inferring a shelf rating from unit size. The ratings are 800, 625, 650, 650, 575 and 600 lb per shelf and they do not move in one direction. The smallest unit is rated highest. Read the figure for the exact series.
  7. Missing the bank height in the part number. The second numeric block is the drawer bank height, and it is what determines how much shelf space is left. Two models that differ only in that block are very different units.
  8. Skipping the retrofit question. Every listing publishes that these drawers install in more than thirty-five brands of shelving. If you already own shelving, the cheapest entry point may not be a complete unit at all.
  9. Ordering all starters. A five-bay run is one starter and four add-ons. Note also that bank height can vary bay to bay within a run, which is the most useful thing about the modular system and the most commonly missed.
  10. Leaving the sprinkler question until after delivery. A drawer bank is the most solid horizontal surface you can put in a shelving frame, no page in the category mentions fire protection, and the site disagrees with itself about whether the shelving is open or closed.

The questions buyers actually ask before ordering.

How do I read a Rousseau part number like R5SEC-754809A?

Left to right: R5 is the Rousseau family. S means shelving, and an A in that position would mean an R-Series cabinet instead. The next letter is width, where E is 36 inches, G is 42 and H is 48. The letter after that is depth, where C is 18 inches and E is 24. After the hyphen, the first two digits are the overall unit height, either 75 or 87 inches. The next two are the height of the drawer bank in inches, either 18, 36 or 48. The last two are the configuration variant, meaning which drawer mix fills the bank. A trailing A means an add-on unit rather than a starter. So R5SEC-754809A is a 36 by 18 inch shelving unit, 75 inches high, with a 48 series bank, variant 09, as an add-on. Note that E means 36 inches as a width and 24 inches as a depth, so position decides which.

Does the same decoder work for the R-Series cabinets?

Yes, for the letters. Swap the S for an A and the width and depth letters mean exactly the same things, so R5SEC and R5AEC are a 36 by 18 inch shelving unit and a 36 by 18 inch cabinet from the same family. The numeric part differs: a cabinet has no drawer bank segment because a cabinet is all bank, and its first numeric block is the cabinet height, which comes in many more values than the shelving line's 75 and 87 inches. The site publishes no explanation of either scheme anywhere.

How much does each drawer hold?

400 pounds, published on 118 of the 121 listings and on the category page and its FAQ. The rating includes the slide mechanism and applies with the drawer fully extended, which is the worst case for the unit, so it is not comparable to a shelf rating on a supported surface. No listing publishes a total unit capacity, and you cannot get one by multiplying, because the frame governs and the shelf levels are loading it at the same time. Three listings omit the 400 pound figure that the others publish; if one of those is on your quote, get it confirmed.

What does the drawer bank height in the part number mean?

It is the total height of the drawer section in inches, either 18, 36 or 48, and it is the segment most buyers miss. The unit's overall height minus the bank height is roughly what is left for shelf levels. So a 75 inch unit with an 18 inch bank publishes five shelves, the same bank in an 87 inch frame publishes six, and a 48 inch bank in that same 75 inch frame publishes four. One exception: the 4809 family publishes a 30 inch bank plus a front access roll-out shelf, which occupies the balance of the 48 inches.

How much will the shelves hold?

It depends on the series and the figures do not behave predictably. Published per shelf: 800 pounds on 36 by 18 inch, 625 on 36 by 24, 650 on both 42 inch series, 575 on 48 by 18 and 600 on 48 by 24. The narrowest and shallowest unit is rated highest, going deeper at 36 inches wide lowers the rating, and going deeper at 48 inches wide raises it. No explanation is published. Read the figure for the exact series rather than inferring it from unit size, and remember that the sum of the shelf ratings is not the unit's total capacity.

What drawer heights can I get?

3, 4 and 6 inches on the product listings, plus an 8 inch drawer asserted on two of the six series pages but published on no listing at all. That is the entire range in this line, and if you need the 8 inch drawer, get the drawer mix confirmed in writing for the specific model. The R-Series cabinets, using the same 400 pound drawers, publish ten heights from 3 to 14 inches. So if anything in your inventory needs a drawer taller than 8 inches, the shelving line cannot hold it and no configuration choice changes that. Measure your tallest item before going further.

Can I lock these drawers?

The category page says optional locking is available and its FAQ repeats it, and most listings mention in general terms that "the systems often have locking mechanisms," but not one of the 121 names a lock type, a cylinder or a keying arrangement, and none offers a lock you can select and buy. None of the 121 listings sells a drawer bank on its own and none names the thirty-five brands, so this is a quote conversation rather than something you can configure on the site. If you already have industrial shelving on the floor, it is worth asking before you price complete units, because it is the question most likely to change the size of the order.

Can I get these on casters?

The category page says units are available in stationary or mobile configurations and devotes a selection bullet to casters and repositioning. Not one of the 121 product listings mentions casters or mobility, and no mobile model exists in the catalogue. So ask specifically rather than assuming a caster option exists on these models. Note as general guidance that a mobile version of a shelving unit is normally rated below the stationary one, and casters raise the centre of gravity on a product that already takes 400 pounds outside its footprint when a drawer opens.
