Rousseau R-Series Stationary Drawer Cabinets

Every R-Series cabinet is described by a model number that tells you the width, the depth, the housing height and the drawer mix. Learn to read it and the rest of the specification falls into place.

Section One

What the R-Series is built to do

A 400 lb per drawer stationary cabinet, and the specific problem it solves.

The Rousseau R-Series is the company's heavy-duty stationary modular drawer cabinet. Every drawer in the series carries a 400 lb load rating and rides on full-extension slides, so the back of the drawer is as reachable as the front. Rousseau backs the rolling mechanism with a lifetime warranty. Those two facts are the whole argument for the series: you can put dense metal in a drawer, pull it all the way out, and expect the slide to still work in fifteen years.

That matters because the failure mode of cheap drawer storage is not the box. It is the slide. A drawer loaded with die sets or collet chucks that binds, sags, or refuses to close is a drawer nobody uses, and the contents migrate back onto a shelf or a bench. Specifying the R-Series is a decision to over-build the moving part.

Where the density comes from

A shelving bay stores parts at whatever pitch the shelves are set to, and everything above a part's height is wasted air. A drawer cabinet sets the pitch per drawer, in inches, and lets you compartmentalize inside each one. A published 48 in. by 24 in. by 60 in. R-Series cabinet with ten 3 in., three 4 in. and two 6 in. drawers gives you fifteen independently organized layers in that one footprint. Getting the same separation on shelving means bins, and bins stack badly and hide their back halves.

The trade is cost per cubic inch. Drawer storage is expensive per unit of volume and cheap per unit of retrieval time. It pays for itself on small, valuable, frequently retrieved items with many distinct SKUs, and it wastes money on bulky, low-value, slow-moving stock. If what you are storing is cardboard cartons of consumables, buy shelving.

Stationary, not mobile

The R-Series designation covers stationary cabinets that sit on a base. Rousseau builds mobile versions of the same drawer architecture on cart frames, and those carry different model prefixes. If the cabinet needs to travel to the machine, you are shopping for a cart, not an R-Series stationary cabinet, and the drawer specification logic in this guide still applies.

Section Two

Reading an R-Series model number

The single most useful skill for buying this line. Once you can read it, you can compare quotes.

An R-Series model number is not a random SKU. It encodes the cabinet's geometry. Learn the four positions and you can tell at a glance whether two quotes are for the same cabinet.

The width and depth codes

Position matters. The same letter means different things in the width slot and the depth slot. C is 24 in. as a width and 18 in. as a depth. Read them in order.

So R5ACD is 24 in. wide by 21 in. deep. R5ADG is 30 in. wide by 27 in. deep. R5AKE is 60 in. wide by 24 in. deep. Two model numbers that share the first five characters are the same footprint and differ only in height and drawer mix.

The two-digit height code

The first two digits after the dash give the height of the drawer housing itself. The published overall height is normally that number plus the base, 2 in. on the standard base. A -44xx cabinet is listed at 46 in. tall, a -58xx at 60 in., a -38xx at 40 in.

Check the listed height, don't compute it

A handful of listings publish the housing height rather than the overall height. The same -5805 configuration appears as both 58 in. and 60 in. depending on how the unit is built and listed. Treat the code as a way to sort and compare models, and take the overall height from the specific listing or quote before you commit to a ceiling clearance, a mezzanine, or a run of cabinets under a mezzanine deck.

The configuration number

The last two digits identify the drawer mix and whether the drawers ship with partitions installed. Across the catalog, configurations are commonly published in pairs. -4401 and -4402 carry the same drawer heights, one divided and one open, with the divided version costing more. If you are comparing prices between suppliers, confirm you are comparing the same configuration number, not just the same dimensions and drawer count.

Suffixes

Some models carry a suffix such as -ST055. On CustomMHS listings the 055 suffix denotes a standard-color unit built to a fixed configuration in Avalanche Blue. If color is not a requirement and the drawer mix suits you, a standard-color configuration avoids the cost and the schedule risk of a custom finish. Confirm the current lead time on the listing or the quote either way.

Section Three

Choosing width

Six standard widths. The right one is a function of what is going in the drawer, not of the wall you are filling.

The R-Series is published in six standard widths: 24, 30, 36, 48, 54 and 60 in.

Width is the dimension most often chosen badly, because it is chosen by looking at available wall space rather than at the longest item that has to lie flat. An R-Series drawer spans the full width of the cabinet. A 48 in. wide cabinet gives you a drawer that can take a 40-plus inch part in one piece.

The test

Measure the longest thing that has to lie flat, add two inches for handling clearance, and buy the first standard width that clears it. Storing a 41 in. part diagonally in a 36 in. drawer works exactly once, then somebody stands it on end and it stops being findable.

The cost of going wide without partitioning

A wide drawer with nothing in it is a sliding table. Parts migrate to the back on every close, and the 400 lb rating tempts people to fill it. Widths at 48 in. and above should be specified with partitions in mind from the start. See Section Seven. If the budget will not carry the partitions, buy the narrower cabinet.

Section Four

Choosing depth

Four depths, and the one that decides whether the aisle still works.

R-Series cabinets are published in 18, 21, 24 and 27 in. depths, though not every depth is offered at every width. The 24 in. and 27 in. depths dominate the wide models. The 21 in. depth appears on the 24 in. and 30 in. widths, and the 18 in. depth on the 36 in. width, where a shallow footprint is the point.

Depth is an aisle decision

Because the drawers are full-extension, an open drawer projects roughly its own depth out from the cabinet face, plus the body of the person using it. A 27 in. deep cabinet in a 6 ft aisle leaves a little over 3 ft of passage when a drawer is out. In a 4 ft aisle it blocks the aisle. This is the single most common regret on wide, deep cabinets: the cabinet is correct, the aisle is not.

Worked: a 27 in. deep cabinet needs roughly 27 + 25 + 30 = 82 in., about 7 ft, from the cabinet's back wall to whatever is opposite it before a drawer can be worked comfortably.

Deeper is not automatically better

The extra 3 in. between a 24 in. and a 27 in. cabinet is real storage, but it is the least accessible storage in the unit and it costs on every drawer. Take the deeper cabinet when the parts need it (long tooling, cable assemblies, fixture plates), not as a general upgrade.

Section Five

Height, and what the base is doing

The base is a handling decision disguised as a dimension.

Published R-Series overall heights run from about 24 in. to 60 in. The housing heights that appear in the model number cluster at 24, 28, 30, 34, 38, 44 and 58 in. Rousseau states plainly that the base is not included in the listed cabinet heights, so a cabinet's real overall height is the housing height plus whichever base it is ordered on.

In practice the published listings are not perfectly consistent about which number they show. The same housing code appears against more than one overall height across the catalog. Use the code to sort and compare models, and take the overall height from the listing.

The two base options

Standard

2 in. forklift base

Ships as standard with a front cover plate. Allows the cabinet to be moved from the front with forks. This is the base the published overall heights assume.

Optional

4 in. base

Adds 2 in. to the overall height. Allows forklift access from the front or the side, and pallet-jack access from the front. Includes a recessed kickplate.

Specify the 4 in. base when the layout is not final

A loaded 60 in. R-Series cabinet weighs several hundred pounds empty. A published 30 in. by 27 in. by 58 in. nine-drawer unit is listed at 641 lb before anything goes in it. If there is any chance the cabinet moves after installation, the extra 2 in. of height buys side forklift access and pallet-jack access, and it is far cheaper to order than to retrofit.

Bench height versus full height

The 30 in. to 40 in. overall heights put the cabinet top at or near working height, which is why those configurations pair with a work surface (see Section Nine). The 46 in. and 60 in. heights are storage-first: the top of a 60 in. cabinet is above comfortable working height and should be treated as a surface for staging, not for work.

Load heavy drawers low

A 60 in. cabinet with 400 lb drawers has a real tip-over envelope when a top drawer is fully extended and loaded. Put the dies, the die sets and the heavy fixture plates in the bottom drawers, and check Section Eleven on anchoring before the tall units are placed.

Section Six

Building the drawer mix

The decision that determines whether the cabinet earns its price.

Once width, depth and height are fixed, the remaining choice is how to divide the housing into drawers. Rousseau publishes a simple rule for the space you have to work with: usable interior height is the cabinet housing height less about 4 in. A 58 in. housing gives roughly 54 in. of drawer stack. Add up the drawer heights in any configuration and they should land at or just under that figure, which is a quick way to sanity-check a quote.

Published R-Series configurations use drawer heights from 3 in. to 14 in., most commonly 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12 and 14 in. Some configurations substitute a door or a roll-out shelf for part of the stack.

Count drawers, not inches

A fixed housing height can be divided many ways, and the number of drawers is what determines how many distinct categories of inventory the cabinet can separate. Two published 48 in. wide, 24 in. deep, 60 in. tall cabinets illustrate the range:

The 15-drawer version costs materially more than the 6-drawer version in the same shell, because you are buying fifteen slide sets rather than six. That premium is worth paying when it buys separation you will actually use, and wasted when half the drawers end up as overflow.

How to size a drawer

Size each drawer to the tallest item it will hold, plus about an inch. The instinct to round up is expensive: every inch of extra drawer height is an inch that cannot become another drawer, and drawers are the unit of organization.

Partitioned or open

Most published configurations exist in a partitioned and a non-partitioned version, usually as consecutive configuration numbers. The open version is cheaper. It is the right choice only when the drawer holds one kind of thing, or holds foam. For anything mixed, the partitions are not an accessory. They are what makes the drawer work.

Section Seven

Partitions, dividers and groove trays

The system that turns a steel box into organized storage.

Rousseau's compartment system has two elements that work together. Partitions are the long separators that divide the drawer along its depth, held by a clip system and repositionable in 1 in. increments, so a layout can be reworked as inventory changes. Dividers locate between the partitions and are held by a clip system, adjustable in 1 in. increments centre to centre, so each lane created by a partition can be subdivided independently.

Work in whole inches

Partitions and dividers adjust in 1 in. increments, centre to centre, so compartment layouts resolve to whole inches. Usable space inside a finished compartment is slightly less than the nominal spacing, because the separators have thickness. Size compartments from the part dimension with a little clearance rather than to a tight fit.

Laying out a drawer

Work in this order. Decide the partition spacing from the widest item in each category, since partitions are the harder element to move. Then set dividers per lane from the depth each item needs. Leave one lane deliberately empty at the back of a mixed drawer, because new SKUs arrive and a layout with no slack gets abandoned within a year.

Both partitions and dividers are removable and repositionable, which is the practical argument for buying a partitioned configuration and adjusting it rather than trying to guess the perfect layout up front. Ordering a drawer open and adding compartments later is also possible, but it means a second purchase order and a second freight charge.

When not to partition

Skip partitions in drawers that will be foamed (Section Eight), drawers holding a single uniform item, and drawers holding cased power tools. Partitions in those drawers cost money and take away usable width.

Section Eight

Liners, foam and tool protection

Cheap on the order, expensive to add later.

A bare steel drawer bottom lets parts slide on every open and close, and it marks precision surfaces. The liner and foam options are the least expensive line items on an R-Series quote and the ones most often cut.

For loose consumables inside a drawer or on a bin panel. RG21 is the conductive version for ESD-sensitive work.

Shadow foam pays for itself in audits

Tool foam (RG42) is the difference between "we think all the tools came back" and being able to see it from six feet away. In aerospace, medical device and any environment with tool accountability requirements, foam the drawers that hold controlled tooling and skip it everywhere else.

Section Nine

Tops, doors and side panels

Turning storage into a station.

A bench-height R-Series cabinet with the right top becomes a work surface with 400 lb drawers underneath it, which is usually a better use of floor space than a separate bench and a separate cabinet.

Doors

Part of the housing can be fitted with a door section instead of drawers, and several published configurations ship that way. Three door types are offered: solid for concealment, polycarbonate where contents should be visible but protected, and wire mesh where visibility and ventilation both matter. A door section paired with a roll-out shelf handles the bulky, awkward items that no drawer height suits.

Side panels

The cabinet sides are usable space. The RC02 utility panel takes hooks (heavy-duty WM9A and WM9B, and lighter WM9F through WM9L) for hanging tools that do not belong in a drawer. The RC04 plastic bin panel holds RG20 bins for fast-moving consumables at the point of use. On a cabinet that sits at the end of an aisle, the side panel is often the most-used surface on the unit.

Section Ten

Locks, security and drawer safety

Two different problems that use the same hardware catalog.

Security

R-Series cabinets ship with a lock on the housing. What varies is the mechanism and how access is managed.

Decide keying before you order

Keyed alike, keyed differently, or master keyed is a decision that costs nothing at order time and is a nuisance afterward. Multiple cabinets in one crib usually want keyed alike with a master; cabinets holding controlled or high-value tooling want keyed differently. Say which on the purchase order.

Drawer safety

These are separate mechanisms and they solve a different problem: a tall cabinet with several loaded drawers open at once is a tipping hazard, and a drawer that rolls open in transit is a damaged drawer.

Handle end caps, handle protectors, a lock-out mechanism and leveling glides round out the option list and are worth reviewing on the quote.

Section Eleven

Freight, siting and anchoring

The practical steps between the purchase order and a working cabinet.

Weight

R-Series cabinets are heavy before they hold anything. A published 36 in. by 24 in. by 40 in. five-drawer unit is listed at 409 lb empty; a 30 in. by 27 in. by 58 in. nine-drawer unit at 641 lb. Add 400 lb of tooling per drawer and a fully loaded tall cabinet is a multi-thousand-pound point load. Two consequences follow.

Anchoring

R-Series cabinets are designed to be anchored to the floor, and tall units should be. The tipping case is a fully extended, fully loaded upper drawer. The moment arm is the full drawer depth, which on a full-extension slide is the whole drawer. Anchor anything 46 in. or taller, anything carrying heavy tooling in upper drawers, and anything in a seismic zone regardless of height.

Do not skip this on tall cabinets

The combination that hurts people is a 60 in. cabinet, an unanchored base, a loaded top drawer at full extension, and somebody leaning on it. The one-drawer-at-a-time mechanism reduces the risk; anchoring removes it. Specify both on tall units.

Placement

Leave the aisle calculated in Section Four. Put the cabinets that get opened most at the end of the run nearest the door. Keep the side that carries a utility or bin panel facing the aisle, not the wall. And load the heavy drawers low, which costs nothing and it is the cheapest stability improvement available.

Lead times

R-Series listings commonly publish a lead time of roughly 10 to 20 business days. Non-standard colors and cabinets with extensive compartment work run longer. If a project date is fixed, ask for the lead time in writing at quote stage and favor a standard configuration and a standard color where the drawer mix allows it.

Section Twelve

Common and costly mistakes

Ten things that go wrong on R-Series orders.

  1. Choosing width from the wall, not the parts. The longest item that has to lie flat sets the width. Everything else is secondary.
  2. Ignoring the aisle. Full-extension drawers project their full depth. A correctly specified cabinet in an aisle that is too narrow is a cabinet nobody fully opens.
  3. Computing overall height from the model number. The two-digit code is the housing height. Take the overall height from the listing, especially under a mezzanine or a duct run.
  4. Buying maximum drawer count by reflex. Fifteen drawers cost far more than six in the same shell. Buy the separation you will use.
  5. Rounding drawer heights up. Every wasted inch of drawer height is an inch that could have been another drawer.
  6. Cutting the partitions to hit a number. An open 48 in. drawer holding mixed inventory is a sliding table. If partitions do not fit the budget, buy the narrower cabinet instead.
  7. Loading heavy drawers high. Dies and fixture plates belong in the bottom third.
  8. Skipping anchoring on tall units. The tipping case is real and the fix is inexpensive.
  9. Not deciding keying at order time. Keyed alike, keyed differently or master keyed costs nothing to specify and is a nuisance to change.
  10. Comparing quotes on dimensions alone. Two cabinets with identical outside dimensions can differ by well over a thousand dollars, and in the 60 in. tall shells by more than double, depending on drawer count and whether the drawers are partitioned. Compare full model numbers, including the configuration digits.

Frequently asked questions

The questions that come up most often on R-Series quotes.

What does the R-Series model number mean?

Reading left to right: R5A identifies the standard R-Series stationary cabinet prefix (some wide multi-drawer stationary units carry a different prefix); the fourth character is the width code; the fifth is the depth code; the first two digits after the dash give the drawer housing height in inches; and the last two digits identify the drawer configuration, including whether partitions are installed. So R5AHE-4417 is 48 in. wide, 24 in. deep, with a 44 in. housing, in configuration 17.

Is every R-Series drawer really rated at 400 lb?

Yes. Rousseau publishes a 400 lb per drawer capacity across the R-Series, on full-extension slides, with a lifetime warranty on the rolling mechanism. That rating is per drawer, not for the cabinet as a whole. Loading every drawer to 400 lb in a tall cabinet creates a floor loading and stability question that is separate from the drawer rating, so anchor tall units and load the heavy drawers low.

What widths and depths are available?

Published widths are 24, 30, 36, 48, 54 and 60 in. Published depths are 18, 21, 24 and 27 in., but not every depth is offered at every width. The 24 in. and 30 in. widths are published in 21 in. and 27 in. depths; the 36 in. width in 18 in. and 24 in.; and the 48, 54 and 60 in. widths in 24 in. and 27 in.

Why do two cabinets with the same dimensions have very different prices?

Almost always drawer count and partitioning. In a 48 in. by 24 in. by 60 in. shell, one published configuration has fifteen drawers and another has six. You are buying slide sets, not steel volume. On top of that, most configurations come in a partitioned and a non-partitioned version at different prices. Compare the full model number including the last two digits.

Should I order the drawers partitioned or add compartments later?

Order them partitioned unless the drawer will hold foam or a single uniform item. Partitions and dividers are held by a clip system and adjust in 1 in. increments, so a factory-partitioned drawer can still be reconfigured later. Adding compartments later means a second order and a second freight charge for parts that cost little when they ship with the cabinet.

What is the difference between the 2 in. and 4 in. base?

The 2 in. forklift base is standard and allows front forklift access. The 4 in. base adds 2 in. to the overall height, includes a recessed kickplate, and allows forklift access from the front or the side plus pallet-jack access from the front. If the cabinet may be relocated after installation, the 4 in. base is worth ordering.

Do R-Series cabinets need to be anchored?

Can an R-Series cabinet be used as a workbench?
