Hallowell Hi-Tech 5-Shelf Open Shelving | Starter and Add-On Units, Three Capacity Tiers

Hallowell Hi-Tech 5-shelf open shelving units are expandable industrial storeroom shelving, available in starter and add-on configurations to build continuous shelving rows. All units are 36" or 48" wide and 87" high, with three depth options (12", 18", or 24") and three capacity tiers that vary by gauge. The five shelves are adjustable to accommodate different item heights throughout the unit.

Starter units include all components needed to stand alone. Add-on units share a pair of uprights with an adjacent starter or add-on unit, reducing the cost per bay in a multi-unit row. Capacity is rated per unit and ranges from 350 pounds (48" wide, lightest gauge, 24" deep) to 1,250 pounds (36" wide, heaviest gauge, 24" deep). At the same gauge tier, capacity decreases as width increases from 36" to 48".

Selecting the Right Unit:
♦ Width, 36" vs. 48", the 36"-wide units (45xx and 55xx and 75xx prefix models) provide higher capacity at each gauge tier than the 48"-wide units (47xx, 57xx, 77xx). The 48"-wide units provide more shelf surface per bay for larger or bulkier items. Choose 36" wide when load capacity is the priority. Choose 48" wide when shelf width is the priority, and the lower capacity is adequate for the items being stored.
♦ Depth: 12", 18", or 24". The depth suffix in the model number encodes the shelf depth: -12 for 12", -18 for 18", -24 for 24". Deeper shelves hold more per tier and are suited to boxes, bins, and larger items. Shelving 12" in depth suits narrow items and positions where floor space in front of the shelving is limited. Match depth to the size of the items being stored and the available floor space.
♦ Capacity tier by gauge: the first digit of the model number identifies the gauge tier. The 4xxx series is the lightest gauge and lowest capacity (350 to 500 lbs per unit). The 5xxx series is the mid-tier (375-800 lbs per unit). The 7xxx series is the heaviest-gauge and highest-capacity (750 to 1,250 lbs per unit). Select the tier based on the actual combined weight of the items to be stored per unit, not just the largest single item.
♦ Starter vs. add-on units: Always begin a row with a starter unit. Add-on units attach to the starter or to each other to extend the row. Each add-on unit requires an adjacent starter or add-on to share uprights with; they cannot stand alone. For a single-unit installation, order only a starter unit. For two or more units in a row, order one starter and one or more add-ons.
♦ 5-shelf configuration, all units in this series include five shelves. The shelf positions are adjustable. If a different shelf count is needed, the Hallowell Hi-Tech 6-shelf series on the next page provides six shelves in the same width and depth options.

Where Commonly Used:
♦ Industrial Stockrooms and MRO Parts Storage, industrial stockrooms storing parts, supplies, and consumables in bin-and-box systems use the Hi-Tech series for adjustable open-shelf organization that keeps inventory visible and accessible without the overhead of closed cabinetry.
♦ Warehouse Back-of-House Storage, warehouses with dedicated pick or staging shelving in back-of-house areas use the Hi-Tech 5-shelf for organized, high-capacity storage in multi-unit rows that span the full length of a storage bay.
♦ Maintenance Department Tool and Supply Storage: maintenance departments store tools, consumables, and spare parts on open shelving; use the Hi-Tech series for organized access to frequently used items without the door-opening requirement of enclosed cabinets.
♦ Distribution Center Overflow and Reserve Storage: distribution centers build dedicated overflow shelving areas for reserve inventory and use multi-unit Hi-Tech rows to hold reserve stock in labeled shelf positions behind or adjacent to the active pick face.
♦ Light Manufacturing Assembly Support, light manufacturing areas staging parts and sub-assemblies at the line use the Hi-Tech shelving to organize working inventory by assembly stage or component type in a visible, adjustable format that adapts as production mix changes.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is the Hallowell Hi-Tech open shelving system designed for?
The Hallowell Hi-Tech open shelving system is built for strong, dependable storage in industrial, commercial, and backroom environments. It is designed to keep inventory, supplies, tools, or equipment organized and easy to access. The open layout makes it simple to see what is stored and retrieve items quickly. This system is ideal for workplaces that need both strength and efficiency in their storage setup.
What is the difference between starter units and add-on units?
Starter units are the base sections that include the components needed to begin a shelving row. Add-on units connect to a starter unit to expand storage in a continuous line. This design allows you to grow your shelving system as your needs increase without starting over. It is a practical way to build a scalable storage layout for changing inventory demands.
How does a five-shelf configuration improve organization?
A five-shelf setup provides multiple storage levels to separate items by size, category, or frequency of use. This helps reduce clutter and makes it easier for staff to find what they need. Using vertical space efficiently can also free up valuable floor area. The result is a cleaner, more structured storage area that supports smoother daily operations.
Is this shelving system durable enough for heavy-duty storage?
Yes, the Hi-Tech shelving system is engineered for demanding environments where strength matters. Its heavy-duty construction supports reliable storage for bulky or dense items used in warehouses, stockrooms, and workshops. It is designed for frequent use while maintaining stability over time. This makes it a dependable choice for long-term industrial storage needs.
Why is open shelving beneficial in fast-moving work areas?
Open shelving keeps items visible and within reach, which speeds up picking, restocking, and daily use. Staff can quickly confirm inventory levels without opening doors or moving obstacles. This improves workflow and reduces wasted time in busy storage areas. Open access also encourages consistent organization since everything is easy to return to its proper place.
