Two ratings, one of them binds
Every hopper is sold with a weight rating and a volume rating. Buyers read one and ignore the other.
Look at any hopper listing and you will see something like 2,000 lbs and 0.25 to 4.0 cubic yards. Those describe two different limits, and for any given material only one of them is the one you will actually hit.
Limit one
You cube out
The hopper fills up before it gets heavy. This is what happens with cardboard, packaging, plastic and most general waste. You are buying volume, and the weight rating is irrelevant.
Limit two
You weight out
The hopper hits its weight limit while still half empty. This is what happens with machining chips, castings, aggregate and wet material. You are buying strength, and the volume is the number that misleads you.
Both mistakes cost money. Buying a 6,000 lb hopper to move cardboard means paying for steel you will never load. Buying a 4 cubic yard hopper for foundry sand means building a device that, filled, is far heavier than the hopper is rated for and heavier than the forklift was planned for.

What does a cubic yard of your material weigh? If you do not know, that is the number to establish before shopping, and section two shows you how to get it in about five minutes.
The density math
Five minutes of arithmetic that decides the whole purchase.
- If that number is below the weight rating
- You will cube out. Buy for volume; the weight rating is spare.
- If it is above the weight rating
- You will weight out. Either buy a stronger hopper, or accept that you can only ever partly fill this one.
- Usable fill
- Weight rating ÷ density = the cubic yards you can actually load

Two worked examples, same hopper
2 × 100 = 200 lb full. You are using 10% of the weight rating. You will cube out every time. Buy the largest volume you can handle; the 2,000 lb rating is doing nothing for you.
Loading stone or gravel at 2,632 lb/cu yd:
2 × 2,632 = 5,264 lb if filled, against a 2,000 lb rating.
Usable fill = 2,000 ÷ 2,632 = 0.76 cubic yards. You can only ever fill it 38% full, and a full one is more than two and a half times its rating.
That second case is why this section exists. Nothing about a hopper stops someone filling it to the brim, and nothing about the material announces its weight. The operator sees a container two thirds empty and keeps loading.
Machining turnings, wet scrap, castings, foundry sand and slurries vary enormously and are frequently denser than the table above suggests. Fill a container of known volume, weigh it, and scale up. It takes ten minutes and it is the difference between a correctly specified hopper and a guess. If the material is wet, weigh it wet.
Capacity tiers and gauge
The category is organised into duty tiers, and the gauge tells you what you are actually getting.
Steel gauge runs backwards: lower numbers are thicker. Hopper duty tiers map to gauge and to base construction fairly consistently across the brands we carry.

Read the base separately from the body
This is where the tiers genuinely differ. The body takes abrasion; the base takes the impact when castings, chips or scrap are dropped in from height, and it carries the concentrated load when the hopper is full.
Notice that some lines offer the same body gauge with an upgraded base, for example a 12 gauge body with a 0.25 inch base rather than 7 gauge. If your material is dropped in rather than placed, the base upgrade is usually the better spend than a heavier body.
Duty tier should reflect the heaviest, sharpest, most abusive thing that will go in the hopper, not the typical thing. Hoppers get used for whatever is nearby, and a medium duty hopper that occasionally receives castings will fail at the base long before its rated life.
Dump mechanisms
The whole point of a self-dumping hopper is that the operator never leaves the forklift seat.
How self-dumping works
The hopper body pivots on a frame that stays on the forks. A latch holds it upright. The operator releases the latch, usually by a cable or lever reachable from the seat, and the body tips forward under the weight of its contents to discharge. When the hopper empties, the body swings back and relatches automatically, ready for the next load.
Two things follow from that mechanism, and both matter:
- It needs weight to dump. A nearly empty hopper may not tip willingly, because the contents are what drive the rotation.
- It relatches on its own. Which is a safety feature, and also means the latch is a wear item that must be inspected. A latch that does not engage is a hopper that can dump unexpectedly.
Dump angle
Standard hoppers tip far enough to discharge most material. 90 degree versions rotate further, which matters for material that clings: wet scrap, sticky material, fine chips that pack. If your operators are currently shaking or prodding a hopper to empty it, dump angle is the fix.
Open ended and chute designs
Open ended hoppers give you an unobstructed end for easy loading and unloading. Chute hoppers are shaped for controlled discharge rather than a single dump, useful when you are feeding something rather than emptying into a skip.
Discharge is a moment of concentrated, shifting weight. Position the truck square to the receptacle, keep everyone clear of the arc, and dump at the lowest practical height. Section seven covers what OSHA has to say about elevated loads and tilting.
Low profile and specialty formats
Where the standard hopper shape is the problem rather than the solution.
Low profile hoppers
A reduced overall height, so the loading edge sits lower. This is an ergonomics purchase: if people are lifting scrap over a rim at chest height all day, a low profile hopper removes that lift. Available across the range, with published capacities from 2,000 to 5,000 lb and large volume versions at 6,000 lb and 2.5 to 3.5 cubic yards.
They also fit under machinery and conveyor discharge points where a standard hopper will not.
Parts hoppers
Smaller units, around 1,000 lb, for components rather than bulk waste. The right scale for a work cell where a full-size hopper would be absurd and would sit part-filled for weeks.
Portable hoppers
Designed to be moved without a forklift for at least part of their cycle. Pairs with the caster accessories in section nine.
Chip trucks
Purpose-built for metal chips and turnings from machining, typically 1,500 to 2,000 lb. Chips are abrasive, often oily, and dense relative to their appearance, which is exactly the combination that destroys general-purpose containers. Covered further in section eight.
The forklift interface
A hopper is a forklift attachment. That changes the arithmetic on the truck, not just the hopper.
Buyers think of the hopper as a container. The forklift thinks of it as an attachment hanging off the front, and attachments change what a truck can safely lift.
The load is further out than you think
Forklift capacity is quoted at a stated load centre, commonly 24 inches from the face of the forks. A hopper puts its mass further forward than a pallet does, because the body extends beyond the fork pockets and the contents fill it toward the front. The effective load centre moves out, and capacity falls as load centre increases.
So the sum you actually need is not "is the hopper under the truck's rated capacity." It is:
Fork pockets and retention
Confirm the fork pocket dimensions match your forks, and that there is a retaining mechanism, usually a chain or bar, that stops the hopper sliding forward off the forks during transport and dumping. Dumping puts the hopper into a forward rotation; retention is what keeps the frame on the forks while that happens.
It is the single most commonly ignored feature on a self-dumping hopper, and it is the one that matters most during the dump cycle. A hopper that slides forward while tipping goes somewhere nobody planned.
What OSHA requires
Two requirements about attachments that most buyers have never read, and one about how you dump.
Attachments need manufacturer approval
29 CFR 1910.178(a)(4) states: "Modifications and additions which affect capacity and safe operation shall not be performed by the customer or user without manufacturers prior written approval." The same paragraph requires that capacity, operation and maintenance instruction plates, tags or decals be changed accordingly.
The truck must be marked for the attachment
1910.178(a)(5) requires that trucks equipped with front-end attachments other than factory installed ones be marked to identify the attachments and show the approximate weight of the truck and attachment combination at maximum elevation with the load laterally centered.
In plain terms: if you hang a hopper on a forklift, the truck's markings are supposed to reflect that. This is routinely missed, and it is the paperwork half of the load centre problem in section six.
Tilting an elevated load
1910.178(o)(6) states: "Tilting forward with load engaging means elevated shall be prohibited except to pick up a load. An elevated load shall not be tilted forward except when the load is in a deposit position over a rack or stack."
Dumping a hopper into a skip is a deposit position, so the operation itself is contemplated. The prohibition bites on travelling elevated and tilted, and on tipping before the hopper is properly positioned over the receptacle.
And when the truck is left
1910.178(m)(5)(i) requires that when a powered industrial truck is left unattended, load engaging means shall be fully lowered, controls neutralised, power shut off and brakes set. A hopper parked at height on an unattended truck is a straightforward violation and an obvious hazard.
Powered industrial truck operation is governed by 1910.178 in full, including operator training and certification requirements that sit well outside the scope of an equipment guide. Use this section to specify and use hoppers sensibly, and confirm your programme against the standard and your own safety function.
Tilt trucks and chip trucks
The non-forklift half of this category, and often the better answer.
Tilt trucks
Wheeled containers with a tilt mechanism, emptied by a person rather than by a forklift. The tilt geometry is the product: it converts emptying from a lifting task into a controlled pour, which is the whole ergonomic case.
Available in steel for hot, sharp or heavy material, and in poly for corrosion resistance, lighter handling and quieter operation. Poly suits general waste and wet environments; steel suits anything that would cut or melt plastic.
Chip trucks
Purpose-built for machining chips and turnings, at 1,500 to 2,000 lb. Chips are a genuinely awkward material: abrasive, usually carrying cutting oil, sharp, and heavier per volume than they look. A chip truck is built for that combination, and using a general waste container instead is how you get a punctured, oil-soaked mess.
Choosing between a hopper and a tilt truck

Many facilities run both: tilt trucks collecting at the point of generation, feeding a hopper that makes the trip to the skip.
Lids, casters and accessories
Small items, and two of them change what the hopper can do.
Lids
Keep contents contained during transport, which matters for light material that blows out, for anything that should not be rained on, and for keeping a hopper from becoming a general dumping ground when it is parked. Also relevant where housekeeping or hygiene rules apply.
Casters
Heavy duty casters let a hopper be repositioned without a forklift, which changes the workflow: the hopper can be pushed to the point of generation, filled there, and only picked up when it is time to dump. Note the interaction with section two: casters have their own capacity, and a hopper full of dense material can exceed what the casters are rated for even when it is inside the hopper's own rating.
Drain plugs
Essential for wet material, coolant-carrying chips and anything stored outdoors where rain collects. A hopper full of accumulated liquid is heavier than anyone expects and dumps unpredictably.
Liners
Protect the hopper from abrasive or corrosive material and make cleaning out far easier.

Common and costly mistakes
The first three are safety issues. The rest are money.
Sizing by volume when the material is dense
A 2 cubic yard hopper of gravel is over 5,000 lb against a 2,000 lb rating. Nothing about the hopper stops someone filling it, and the operator sees a container two thirds empty.
Ignoring load centre on the forklift
A hopper puts its mass further forward than a pallet does, and truck capacity falls as load centre increases. Check the truck's capacity at the hopper's actual load centre, not the 24 inch data plate figure.
Not using the retaining chain
The most ignored feature on a self-dumping hopper, and the one that matters most during the dump cycle.
Missing the OSHA attachment requirements
1910.178(a)(4) and (a)(5) require manufacturer approval for capacity-affecting additions and require the truck to be marked for non-factory front-end attachments. Routinely overlooked.
Buying duty tier for the average material
Specify for the heaviest and most abusive thing that will go in it. Hoppers receive whatever is nearby.
Reading body gauge and ignoring base construction
The base takes the impact and the concentrated load. If material is dropped rather than placed, the base upgrade beats a heavier body.
Overbuying for light waste
Cardboard at 100 lb per cubic yard uses 10% of a 2,000 lb rating. Paying for 6,000 lb of steel to move packaging is money that buys nothing.
Forgetting the drain plug on wet material
Accumulated coolant or rainwater adds unaccounted weight and makes discharge unpredictable.
Exceeding the caster rating
Casters have their own capacity. A hopper inside its own rating can still be over what the casters will take.

Inspection and maintenance
This equipment carries tons of material above people, and one component does all the safety work.
- Test the latch every shift. It is the only thing holding the body upright, it relatches automatically, and it is a wear item. A latch that does not fully engage is a hopper that can dump unexpectedly.
- Check the pivot points for wear, elongation of holes, and adequate lubrication. Elongated pivot holes change the geometry and the way the hopper tips.
- Inspect the release cable or lever for fraying, kinks and free operation. An operator who has to fight the release is an operator getting off the truck.
- Inspect the base for deformation, cracking and wear-through, particularly if material is dropped in. The base fails first and it fails where you cannot see it.
- Check fork pockets for spreading and deformation, and confirm the retaining chain or bar is present and undamaged.
- Check welds at the pivot mounts and around the base, which are the highest-stress joints.
- Keep drain plugs clear and drain accumulated liquid before moving.
- Inspect casters for flat spots and stiff swivels, given the concentrated loads.
- Take a damaged hopper out of service rather than working around it. There is no safe workaround for a failed latch.
- Confirm the forklift is still marked correctly if attachments have changed since the truck was last surveyed.

How do I choose between the weight rating and the volume rating?
Multiply the hopper's cubic yards by your material's pounds per cubic yard. If the result is below the weight rating you will cube out, so buy for volume. If it is above, you will weight out and can only ever part-fill that hopper. A 2 cubic yard hopper of flattened cardboard at 100 lb/cu yd weighs about 200 lb against a 2,000 lb rating; the same hopper filled with gravel at 2,632 lb/cu yd would be over 5,200 lb.

Steel or poly tilt truck?
Steel for hot, sharp or heavy material, and anywhere a plastic body would be cut or melted. Poly for general waste and wet or corrosive environments, where it is lighter to handle, quieter and will not rust. Machining chips generally want a purpose-built steel chip truck, because they combine abrasion, cutting oil, sharp edges and more density than they appear to have.
Do I need a lid and a drain plug?
A lid if the material blows out, should not be rained on, or if a parked open hopper becomes a general dumping ground. A drain plug for wet material, coolant-carrying chips and anything stored outdoors. Accumulated liquid adds weight nobody accounts for and makes the dump unpredictable.
How often should hoppers be inspected?
Test the latch every shift, since it is the only thing holding the body upright and it is a wear item. On a regular schedule, check pivot points for wear and hole elongation, the release cable for fraying, the base for deformation and wear-through, fork pockets for spreading, the retaining chain, and welds at the pivot mounts.
