Four machines, one decision
This category looks sprawling. Underneath, almost every stacker is one of four combinations.
Two functions can each be manual or powered: lifting the load, and driving the machine along the floor. That gives four machines, and they are separated by price, weight, and how often you use them.
Pick the row by counting cycles, not by weight
The weight of the load tells you the capacity class. It does not tell you which of the four to buy. That comes from how many times a shift someone does it and how far they travel:
- A few lifts a day, short distances. Manual lift and push.
- Many lifts a day, short distances. Powered lift, manual push. Almost always the best value in this category.
- Many lifts a day, long distances or ramps. Fully powered.
- Nobody is lifting, but everybody is bending. A self-levelling cart or a lift table.
Pushing a wheeled machine across a smooth floor is not what hurts people. Pumping a hydraulic handle forty times a shift is. If budget is tight, buy the powered lift and keep pushing.
Load centre: the spec that derates you
A machine rated 3,000 lb will not lift 3,000 lb if the load sticks out too far. This is arithmetic, and almost nobody runs it.
Capacity is always quoted at a stated load centre: the horizontal distance from the face of the forks to the centre of gravity of the load. The industry standard reference is 24 inches, which is where a standard 48 inch deep pallet puts its centre of gravity, because you measure the load's depth and halve it.
Push the centre of gravity further out and capacity falls, because the machine is now resisting a longer lever.

- Uneven loads
- Centre of gravity is not the midpoint. Measure or estimate conservatively
48″ deep load → centre at 24″ → 3,000 lb. Full capacity.
60″ deep load → centre at 30″ → 3,000 × (24 ÷ 30) = 2,400 lb. You just lost 20%.
72″ deep load → centre at 36″ → 3,000 × (24 ÷ 36) = 2,000 lb. You lost a third.
Nothing about the machine announces this. The data plate says 3,000 lb, the load looks like it fits on the forks, and the stacker will happily attempt the lift. What changes is stability, and the failure mode is the machine tipping forward rather than the hydraulics refusing.
Where load centre catches people out
- Deep pallets and oversized loads. Anything past 48 inches deep starts eating capacity.
- Loads that overhang the forks. Common with long stock and awkward crates.
- Unevenly packed pallets. The centre of gravity is wherever the weight actually is, not the geometric middle.
- Attachments. A rotator, tilter or box holder adds its own weight forward of the fork face and moves the effective load centre out before you have loaded anything. This is the same problem covered in our hoppers guide for forklift attachments.
When you request a quote, state your load's depth and how it is packed. A supplier who knows that can give you the capacity that applies to your work rather than the number on the brochure. If your loads are deep or awkward, this single question changes which machine you should buy.
Straddle, fork-over or counterbalance
Base geometry. It decides what you can pick up and how much aisle you need.
All three exist to solve the same problem, which is stopping the machine tipping forward when it lifts. They solve it differently, and the difference is what fits under your load.
Most stable
Straddle legs
Outrigger legs extend forward, straddling outside the load, so the load sits within the machine's footprint. Most stable and generally the highest capacity for the money. The legs must fit around whatever you are lifting, which rules out loads sitting flush on the floor or against a wall.
Most versatile
Fork-over
Legs run underneath the load, with forks above them. Suits open-bottom pallets and skids that give the legs somewhere to go. Narrower overall than straddle, and it handles loads that a straddle leg cannot reach around.
Tightest aisles
Counterbalance
Lifts without outrigger legs, using weight in the machine body to counter the load, exactly like a full-size forklift. Nothing has to fit under or around the load, so it will pick up from the floor, from a bench, or from inside a truck. The cost is capacity: counterbalance units in this class commonly run 200 to 2,200 lb, well below a straddle unit of similar size.

The practical rule: if straddle legs will fit around your load, buy straddle, because you get more capacity and more stability for the money. Reach for counterbalance when the geometry genuinely will not allow legs, and accept the lower rating that comes with it.
Capacity at height
The second place a headline capacity figure can mislead you.
On many machines, rated capacity is not constant through the full lift range. A stacker may carry its full rating at low height and be derated near the top of the mast, because raising the load raises the combined centre of gravity and reduces stability.
The lines we carry illustrate how wide the range gets. One fully powered stacker offers 36 to 65 inches of lift at 2,200 lb. Another reaches 36 to 130 inches. A third is rated 3,000 lb but to 63 inches. Notice the pattern: the highest lift and the highest capacity are usually not the same machine.
1. What is the capacity at my maximum working height, not at ground level? 2. Does the mast fit under my lowest obstruction, doorway or sprinkler when lowered? A machine that reaches 130 inches has a mast tall enough to matter when travelling.
Match lift height to the real requirement
Buying more lift height than you need costs money, adds mast weight and creates clearance problems. Measure the highest point you actually place loads at, add a little for clearance over the beam or shelf, and buy to that. If a small proportion of your work needs much more height, that is often a case for a different machine for that task rather than upgrading the whole fleet.
The training obligation
The part of this purchase that catches buyers out, and it is not in the equipment price.
Buyers reason that a compact stacker is not a forklift, so forklift rules do not apply. OSHA's scope says otherwise. 29 CFR 1910.178 covers "fork trucks, tractors, platform lift trucks, motorized hand trucks, and other specialized industrial trucks powered by electric motors or internal combustion engines."
A battery-powered stacker is a motorized hand truck. It is a powered industrial truck, and the operator training requirements apply.

So the true cost of a powered unit includes training your operators, evaluating them, keeping records, and re-evaluating every three years. That is manageable and entirely normal, but it should be in the decision rather than a surprise afterwards.
If you have one operator who lifts occasionally, a fully manual stacker avoids the obligation entirely and may be the better overall answer even though the work is slightly harder. If you already run forklifts and have a training programme, adding powered stackers to it costs very little. Count that before comparing machine prices.

Pallet trucks and skid lifts
Horizontal movement rather than stacking, and the highest capacities in the category.
Pallet trucks
Lift a pallet just clear of the floor and move it. No stacking, which is why capacities are the highest here: fully powered units in the lines we carry run to 4,000 lb, and a lithium-powered version handles 3,300 lb on 48 inch forks.
Three variants worth knowing:
- Manual. The default. Cheap, reliable, and hard on the operator over distance.
- Fully powered. Drive and lift, so the operator walks alongside. Justified by distance and repetition rather than weight.
- Scale pallet trucks. A built-in scale weighs palletised loads during transport, removing a separate weighing step. Genuinely useful for shipping, receiving and any process that reconciles by weight.
Skid lifts
Skids sit flat on the floor with no pallet openings, so a pallet truck cannot get under them. Skid lifts are built for that geometry, raising and transporting skids without a forklift. Available manual and powered, and in stainless for washdown environments.
Pallet, skid, or a solid base. It sounds trivial and it determines which machine will physically engage the load. A powered pallet truck cannot lift a closed-bottom skid, and buying one for a floor full of skids is a common and expensive mismatch.
Lift carts and post lifts
Not for stacking. For putting work at the right height so people stop bending.
Scissor lift carts
A wheeled cart with a scissor mechanism that raises the deck. Manual versions are cranked or foot-pumped; battery versions reduce operator effort for frequent height adjustments. The use case is a work cell or packing station where material needs to be at working height and then moved.
Self-levelling carts
The clever one. A spring or air mechanism automatically maintains a consistent working height as material is removed. As the load lightens, the deck rises. Someone picking from a pallet never has to bend into the bottom of it.
This is one of the highest-return ergonomic purchases in a picking or packing operation, and it requires no operator action at all, which means it cannot be forgotten or bypassed.
Linear actuated lift carts
A linear actuator gives smooth, precise height adjustment during positioning, rather than the stepped feel of some hydraulic systems. Worth it where the exact height matters, such as feeding a machine or aligning to a conveyor.
Post lift tables
Post-style lifts give compact vertical positioning at the point of use. Where a scissor mechanism needs a footprint and a travel range, a post lift occupies less floor and suits fixed workstation positions. Our bulk containers guide and the workbench category both intersect here.
Watch where people bend. If operators are reaching into the bottom of pallets, containers or cartons repeatedly, the problem is height rather than weight, and a lift cart or self-levelling unit addresses it better than any lifting aid.
Rotators, reel handling and tilters
Where the job is changing a load's orientation rather than its height.
Box and crate rotators
Lift a box or crate, clamp it, and rotate or tilt it so the contents can be poured, decanted or accessed. The specification splits two ways, and both matter:
- Adjustable versus non-adjustable holders. An adjustable holder accommodates varying box widths; a fixed holder suits consistent box sizes. If you run one standard container, fixed is simpler and cheaper. If your containers vary, adjustable is not optional.
- How much is powered. The lines we carry range from powered lift with manual push and manual rotation, up to fully powered lift, drive, rotation and clamping. Match this to cycle count, exactly as in section one.
Both fork-over and straddle-leg bases are available across the range, so base geometry from section three remains a separate decision.
Reel rotators and lifters
Reels of wire, cable and hose are heavy, awkward and roll if you let go. Reel handling equipment lifts, clamps and rotates them under control, gently positioning reels with controlled, precise lifting and reducing strain on operators, which also reduces dropped and mishandled reels.

Container and pallet tilters
Tilt a container so its contents present at an angle rather than requiring someone to reach down into it. Battery powered tilters in these lines are rated 2,200 lb, with straddle-leg versions for extra stability and stainless versions for food-grade and washdown work.

Batteries
The part of a powered machine that determines whether it is available when someone needs it.
Two technologies dominate, and the difference shows up in how you run the equipment rather than in what it lifts.

One of the pallet trucks in this category is offered with a lithium battery with fast-swap capability, giving extended runtime and quick exchange. That combination is what makes a single machine cover more than one shift.
Before buying powered equipment, settle where it charges, whether the circuit is adequate, and whether the location is ventilated as required for the battery type. A machine parked away from a charger because the nearest outlet is inconvenient is a machine people stop using.
Stainless and washdown
A well-populated corner of this category, and for good reason.
Painted steel lift equipment does not survive food, pharmaceutical or washdown environments. Purpose-built stainless versions exist across almost every format in this category: skid lifts manual and powered, fork-over and straddle stackers, pallet trucks, and tilters.
What to check beyond the shell:
- Are the mechanisms enclosed? A stainless body over exposed hydraulics and open bearings is only half the specification.
- What is the cleaning chemistry? As covered in our cleanroom guide, bleach-based cleaning pushes you toward 316 rather than 304.
- Battery and charging arrangement in a wet area, which is a genuine design question rather than an afterthought.
- Wheels and castors suited to wet floors and to the same non-shedding, cleanable requirements as the rest of the equipment.

Common and costly mistakes
The first two show up as accidents. The rest show up as regret.
Taking the headline capacity at face value
It applies at the rated load centre, usually 24 inches. A deeper or overhanging load derates the machine, and nothing about the machine tells you.
Not knowing about the training requirement
1910.178 covers motorized hand trucks. A battery-powered stacker is a powered industrial truck, and 1910.178(l) training, evaluation and three-year re-evaluation apply.
Confusing maximum lift with maximum capacity
The highest-reaching machine and the highest-capacity machine are usually not the same one. Ask for capacity at your working height.
Buying powered drive when powered lift was the need
Pushing a wheeled machine is not what injures people. Pumping a hydraulic handle repeatedly is. Powered lift with manual push is usually the better value.
Choosing counterbalance without needing to
It costs you capacity. If straddle legs will fit around the load, straddle gives more stability and more capacity for the money.
Buying a pallet truck for skids
A closed-bottom skid has no openings. Check what your loads actually sit on before ordering.
Ignoring mast height when lowered
A machine that reaches 130 inches has a mast tall enough to matter at doorways, low beams and sprinklers when travelling.
Forgetting the attachment moves the load centre
A rotator, tilter or box holder adds weight forward of the fork face before you load anything.
Treating charging as an afterthought
Settle location, circuit and ventilation before purchase. Equipment parked away from a charger stops being used.
Buying more lift height than the job needs
It costs money, adds mast weight and creates clearance problems. Measure the highest point you actually place loads at.

Rule of thumb: if straddle legs fit, buy straddle.
Is the rated capacity the same at full lift height?
Often not. Raising the load raises the combined centre of gravity and reduces stability, so many machines are derated near the top of the mast. Notice too that the highest-lifting and highest-capacity machines in a range are usually different units: one line offers 130 inches of lift, while the 3,000 lb model reaches 63 inches. Ask for capacity at your maximum working height.
Powered lift or fully powered?
Decide by distance and frequency rather than weight. Powered lift with manual push removes the effort that actually causes fatigue and injury, while keeping the machine light and cheaper. Fully powered earns its cost when travel distances are long, there are ramps, or the cycle repeats many times a shift. For most buyers, powered lift with manual push is the best value in this category.
What is a self-levelling cart for?
It maintains a consistent working height automatically as material is removed, so the deck rises as the load lightens and nobody has to bend into the bottom of a pallet. It needs no operator action, which means it cannot be forgotten or bypassed. In picking and packing operations it is one of the highest-return ergonomic purchases available.
Why can't my pallet truck lift this skid?
Because a skid sits flat on the floor with no pallet openings for the forks to enter. Skid lifts are built for that geometry and raise and transport skids without a forklift, in manual, powered and stainless versions. Check what your loads actually sit on before ordering, since this mismatch is common and expensive.
Lead-acid or lithium?
Lead-acid costs less to buy and suits single-shift operations charging overnight, but needs a long charge with cool-down, and opportunity charging shortens its life. Lithium costs more, charges fast, tolerates opportunity charging between tasks, needs essentially no maintenance, and is available with fast-swap on some units. If you run multiple shifts or downtime is expensive, lithium usually wins on total cost.
Adjustable or fixed box holders on a rotator?
Adjustable holders accommodate varying box widths; fixed holders suit consistent box sizes and are simpler and cheaper. If you run one standard container throughout, fixed is fine. If your containers vary at all, adjustable is not really optional, because a holder that does not grip properly is a load that can shift during rotation.
What should I check on stainless lift equipment?
That the mechanisms are enclosed rather than just the shell being stainless, since exposed hydraulics and open bearings defeat the purpose. Confirm the grade against your cleaning chemistry, as bleach-based cleaning pushes you to 316 rather than 304.
