Hallowell Hi-Tech 6-Shelf Closed Stockroom Shelving | Enclosed Steel, Three Capacity Tiers

Hallowell Hi-Tech 6-shelf closed stockroom shelving combines the enclosed steel panel construction of the 5-shelf closed series with one additional shelf tier at the same 87" height. Solid steel side and back panels enclose the stored inventory, protecting it from dust and providing a more controlled visual appearance than open shelving. The Hi-Tech structural specification carries through: tubular welded box beams at the front and rear of each shelf, triple-bend side flanges, and reinforced welded corners. Pre-punched shelves accept dividers, and four-clip installation keeps setup fast.

All units are 36" or 48" wide and 87" high, with three depth options (12", 18", or 24") and three gauge tiers. Capacity ranges from 350 to 1,250 pounds per unit. Starter units begin a row and stand alone. Add-on units share uprights with adjacent units at a lower per-bay cost in multi-unit rows.

Selecting the Right Unit:

♦ 6-shelf closed vs. 5-shelf closed, both series are 87" high with the same width, depth, and gauge options. The 6-shelf configuration adds one shelf tier, reducing the average inter-shelf clearance. Choose the 6-shelf when more storage levels per unit are needed, and the reduced inter-shelf height is compatible with the stored items. Choose the 5-shelf when taller items require more clearance between shelf levels.

♦ Closed vs. open 6-shelf Hi-Tech, the closed series adds solid side and back panels compared to the open series. The structural construction and capacity are identical at matching size and gauge combinations. Choose closed when dust protection, inventory containment, or an enclosed visual appearance is required. Choose open when unrestricted access and visibility from multiple angles are preferred.

♦ Width, 36" vs. 48", the 36"-wide units (4521, 5521, 7521) carry higher capacity at each gauge tier than the 48"-wide units (4721, 5721, 7721). Choose 36" when capacity is the priority. Choose 48" when a wider shelf surface suits the items and the lower capacity is adequate.

♦ Depth, 12", 18", or 24", the depth suffix (-12, -18, -24) encodes the shelf depth. Match to the items being stored and the available floor space in front of the shelving.

♦ Capacity tier by gauge: the first digit identifies the gauge tier. The 4xxx series is the lightest gauge (350-500 lb per unit). The 5xxx series is the mid-tier (375-800 lbs per unit). The 7xxx series is the heaviest gauge (750-1,250 lbs per unit). Select the tier based on the actual combined weight of inventory to be stored per unit.

♦ Starter vs. add-on units, starter units stand alone and begin the row. Add-on units require an adjacent starter or add-on to share uprights with; they cannot stand alone. For a single unit, order a starter. For rows of two or more, order one starter and the balance as add-ons.

Where Commonly Used:

♦ Industrial Stockrooms and Tool Cribs, stockrooms and tool cribs managing contained access to tooling, consumables, and supplies use 6-shelf closed shelving to organize inventory into more tier positions per unit while keeping contents enclosed and protected from dust and incidental access between issue transactions.

♦ Maintenance Department Supply Rooms, maintenance departments with a high variety of spare parts, filters, lubricants, and small components use the additional shelf tier of the 6-shelf series to fit more SKU positions into the same floor footprint while maintaining enclosed, organized storage.

♦ Back-of-House Enclosed Storage Areas, facilities organizing non-public storage areas in institutional, retail, or commercial environments use closed shelving to maintain a clean, professional, enclosed storage environment that presents well during inspections and audits.

♦ Multi-User Storerooms with Access Control Requirements: Storerooms accessed by multiple shifts or departments use closed shelving to reduce the visual accumulation of loose items on shelf faces that occurs on open shelving in multi-user environments, and to support cleaner inventory control practices.

♦ Educational Institution and Healthcare Support Storage, school and university supply rooms, and non-clinical healthcare support areas use the 6-shelf closed series for organized enclosed storage of supplies shared among multiple users, with more shelf positions per unit than the 5-shelf format.

♦ Government and Institutional Facilities, government buildings and institutional facilities requiring structured, enclosed, auditable storage for departmental supplies and equipment use the Hi-Tech 6-shelf closed series for its combination of heavy-duty steel construction, enclosed panels, and multi-tier organization.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is the Hallowell Hi-Tech 6-shelf closed stockroom shelving system used for?
The Hallowell Hi-Tech six-shelf closed-stockroom shelving system is designed for secure, organized storage in industrial, commercial, and institutional environments. It provides enclosed shelving that helps protect supplies, tools, and inventory from dust and unnecessary handling. Its enclosed design keeps storage areas tidy and controlled. It is ideal for stockrooms, maintenance areas, and back-of-house facilities.
How does a six-shelf configuration improve storage capacity?
With six shelves, this system offers ample vertical space to organize a wide range of items. It allows you to separate inventory by size, category, or frequency of use, making it easier to find and retrieve items. Maximizing vertical storage helps free up valuable floor space for other operations. This design supports better organization in busy stockrooms and backrooms.
What does enclosed steel storage provide that open shelving does not?
Enclosed steel shelving protects stored items from dust, debris, and accidental handling, helping maintain a cleaner inventory. It also creates a more controlled appearance, reducing visual clutter in shared storage zones. This can be especially important in workplaces where specific supplies must remain protected or where organizational standards matter. Closed storage also supports better asset control in multi-user areas.
How do starter and adder units make this system flexible?
Starter units provide a complete shelving section on their own, while adder units attach directly to expand your storage run without wasting space. This modular approach makes it easy to start with a configuration that fits your current needs and grow it as your inventory changes. It allows you to build a custom storage layout that evolves with your facility. That flexibility helps future-proof your stockroom.
Is this shelving durable enough for heavy-duty use?
Yes, the Hi-Tech closed shelving system is designed with heavy-duty steel construction to withstand demanding environments. It supports frequent daily use and heavier stored materials without losing stability. The enclosed design also reinforces structural strength while keeping your inventory secure. This makes it a reliable choice for long-term storage needs.
Is the manufacturer’s warranty included with my purchase?
Yes. All products sold on CustomMHS.com include the original manufacturer’s warranty unless otherwise noted. Custom MHS is an authorized dealer for the brands we carry, which means your purchase is covered by the manufacturer's full factory warranty.
