Buying Guide of the Week: Lockers
How tall is a 72-inch locker, really?
78 inches. Standard lockers sit on 6-inch legs, and a sloped top can add up to 8 inches more. Check the frame height against your ceiling, not the locker height.
How many lockers need to be ADA accessible?
At least 5 percent, and no fewer than one of each type you install. The usable opening also has to sit between 15 and 48 inches off the floor, which usually means lower-tier openings only.
Does OSHA require separate lockers for work clothes?
Where protective clothing may be contaminated with toxic materials, OSHA 1910.141(e) requires separate storage for street clothes and protective clothing. That can double your opening count.
Why do locker rooms end up smelling?
Damp clothing in standard louvered lockers. Ventilated lockers move air through the doors and sides, and ventilation can't be added after the fact.
The full guide also shows how to decode a Hallowell model number, compare knock-down vs assembled on installed cost, choose locks, and when all-welded or wire lockers make sense.

State and local codes may be stricter and requirements should be confirmed with your architect or authority having jurisdiction.
