Rack Protectors - Minimize Damage & Maximize Safety

Rack Protectors

Rack protectors shield pallet rack uprights, row ends, and building columns from the forklift and pallet jack strikes that happen every day in working aisles. Most of this contact is low and slow, which is why it gets overlooked, but the damage adds up. Each hit dents or bends the steel a little more, and a damaged upright loses load capacity well before it looks unsafe from the aisle.

ANSI MH16.1, the Rack Manufacturers Institute specification for industrial steel storage racks, identifies column damage from forklift impact as a leading cause of rack failure and points to column protectors and regular inspection as practical ways to control it. Protection delivers the most value at aisle ends and intersections, where trucks turn and traffic converges, and it supports a facility's broader OSHA safety obligations by reducing the risk of rack collapse.

Building columns face the same impact risk with higher stakes. A damaged rack upright can be unloaded and replaced, but a damaged structural column affects the building itself and is far harder to repair. Full-height column guards wrap the column to absorb strikes from any direction, while corner protectors cover exposed corners on columns and rack posts.

For row ends, Handle-It offers two end-of-aisle designs in 42" and 48" lengths. The Rack End Protector (Product A) uses a wider footprint that spreads impact across more area, while the Space Saving End of Aisle Rack Protector (Product B) provides similar protection in a narrower profile for aisles where clearance is tight.

Product Lines Available:
Upright and post protection includes Husky pallet rack upright protectors from 12" to 18" high, the Handle-It P12-3R universal post protector, Handle-It post protectors from 12" to 24" high, and the 4" Handle-It V-Nose guard that deflects strikes at the base of the upright. Vestil adds structural rack guards with rubber bumpers from 12-1/4" to 36-1/4" high and low profile rack guards from 11-7/8" to 35-7/8" high. Column protection covers Handle-It corner column protectors from 12" to 42" high and Vestil hexagonal column guards from 48" to 60" high, and row ends are covered by Handle-It rack end and space saving end of aisle protectors in 42" to 48" lengths.

Selecting the Right Type:
♦ What you are protecting: use post and upright protectors on aisle-facing rack frames, rack end protectors at row ends, and hexagonal column guards on building columns.
♦ Height of exposure: low guards cover the base where pallet jacks and fork tips make contact, while taller guards suit areas where forks, loads, or the truck body can reach higher on the column.
♦ Aisle clearance: Choose the standard Rack End Protector (Product A) when space allows, or the Space Saving End of Aisle Rack Protector (Product B) where aisles are tight.
♦ Impact type: Vestil structural rack guards with rubber bumpers cushion strikes, a good fit for cold storage and freezer areas where slick floors make contact more likely.

Where Commonly Used:
Rack protectors are used at aisle ends and intersections in distribution centers, along forklift routes in manufacturing plants, around building columns in busy warehouses, in cold storage and freezer facilities, and in both new rack installations and retrofits of existing systems.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is pallet rack upright protection used for?

Pallet rack upright protection is designed to shield rack columns from forklift impacts and everyday warehouse traffic. These protectors help prevent structural damage that can weaken an entire rack system. By reducing collisions, facilities improve safety and extend the life of their storage infrastructure.

Why is protecting rack uprights so important?

Rack uprights are one of the most vulnerable parts of any pallet racking system. Even minor forklift strikes can compromise rack stability and create serious safety risks. Upright protection helps avoid costly repairs, product loss, and potential collapse hazards.

What types of rack upright protectors are available?

Rack upright protection products come in several styles, including steel column guards, bolt-on protectors, and wraparound barriers. Different designs are used depending on rack type, traffic level, and impact exposure. Choosing the right style ensures the best balance of safety and durability.

Where should upright protection be installed first?

Upright protection should be installed at rack end zones, aisle corners, and high-traffic intersections where impacts are most likely. These locations experience the most turning, staging, and forklift maneuvering. Protecting these critical uprights first provides the greatest immediate safety benefit.

How does upright protection reduce warehouse maintenance costs?

Protectors absorb impact before damage reaches the rack itself, preventing expensive structural repairs. They also reduce downtime caused by rack inspections, replacements, or reconfigurations after collisions. Over time, this leads to lower operational costs and fewer safety interruptions.

How do I choose the right rack upright protection for my facility?

The best choice depends on forklift traffic volume, rack layout, and the level of impact risk in specific areas. Heavy-duty steel guards are ideal for high-impact zones, while lighter protectors may work in lower-traffic sections. Reviewing traffic patterns and hazard points is the best way to select the right solution.
