Buying Guide of the Week: Cabinets & Modular Drawer Storage
Do modular drawer cabinets really save 70% of floor space?
That figure comes from manufacturers, not independent measurement. The savings are real, though: shelving wastes the air above short parts, the hard-to-reach back of each shelf, and the gaps between bins. The guide shows how to calculate your own number.
What's the difference between a 100 lb and a 400 lb drawer?
It's the main split in the market. Heavy-duty drawers rated 400 lbs suit dies, inserts and dense metal tooling. 100 lb drawers suit hand tools, fittings and electronic components.
Is a taller cabinet more expensive per drawer?
Usually the opposite. On published pricing, a 60" cabinet costs about 15% less per drawer than a 32" cabinet of the same width and depth.
Can a heavy-gauge steel cabinet store flammable liquids?
No. OSHA requires a double wall with a 1-1/2" air space, a three-point lock and a door sill raised at least 2". Gauge alone doesn't qualify a cabinet.
The full guide also covers how to read gauge and hinge specs, oxygen and fuel gas cylinder separation, anchoring, and choosing a keying scheme.
