Self-Dumping Hopper Sizing: Weight Capacity, Material Density and Forklift Safety

Self-Dumping Hopper Sizing: Weight Capacity, Material Density and Forklift Safety

Buying Guide of the Week: Hoppers & Tilt Trucks

How can a half-full hopper be overloaded?

Every hopper has a weight rating and a volume rating, and dense material hits the weight limit first. A 2 cubic yard hopper filled with gravel would weigh over 5,200 lbs. If it's rated 2,000 lbs, it can only be filled about 38% of the way.

What does a cubic yard of my material weigh?

Published figures range widely: flattened cardboard is about 100 lbs, metal scrap about 906 lbs, and stone or gravel about 2,632 lbs. For chips, castings or anything wet, weigh a sample.

Does a hopper reduce my forklift's capacity?

Yes. A hopper's weight sits further forward than a pallet, and forklift capacity drops as the load moves out. Check the truck's capacity at the hopper's real load center, not the data plate figure.

Why won't my hopper empty all the way?

Usually the material is clinging or packing. A 90 degree dump version rotates further and clears wet scrap and fine chips.

The full guide also covers duty tiers and steel gauge, OSHA rules for forklift attachments, latch inspection, and when a tilt truck is the better choice.

Forklift operation, including operator training, is governed by OSHA 1910.178 in full, and that ratings and load center capacity should be confirmed against manufacturer data.
