Industrial Chairs and Stools: How to Match Seat Height, Base and Material to the Job

Industrial Chairs and Stools: How to Match Seat Height, Base and Material to the Job

Buying Guide of the Week: Chairs & Stools

What seat height do I need for my workbench?

Measure the bench from floor to top and subtract 12 inches. A 40" bench gives a 28" ideal seat height. Pick a chair whose adjustment range is centered on that number, not one that just barely reaches it.

Should I order casters or glides?

Casters if the operator moves along the bench. Glides for tall chairs people climb onto, stations with anti-fatigue mats, and floors with grating or thresholds.

Does an ESD chair make my area static-safe?

Not by itself. It's one part of an ESD program, and swapping worn ESD casters for standard ones silently breaks the grounding path.

Is a fabric seat OK in a machine shop?

Fabric absorbs coolant, oil and solvents. In wet or oily areas, vinyl or molded urethane will outlast it many times over.

The full guide also shows how to decode a BioFit model number, when to add a footring, how to order cleanroom seating by ISO class, and what the 13-year warranty does and doesn't cover.
