Buying Guide of the Week: Ladders & Work Platforms
Does a 250 lb ladder rating mean it holds a 250 lb person?
No. OSHA counts the worker plus everything they carry. A 200 lb worker with PPE, a tool belt and a box of parts can easily total 260 lbs, over a 250 lb rating without feeling heavy at all.
Which duty rating should I buy for industrial work?
Type IA at 300 lbs is a reasonable minimum, and Type IAA at 375 lbs is worth it where workers carry tools or materials. Watch the numbering: it runs backwards, so Type III is the lightest.
When does a rolling ladder or platform need guardrails?
Handrails are required above 4 feet. Above 10 feet, OSHA adds midrails, guardrails and toeboards, so check that a quote includes them.
How often do ladders need to be inspected?
OSHA 1910.23 requires an inspection before first use in every work shift.
The full guide also covers 50 degree walk-down ladders, steel vs aluminum, how spring-loaded casters lock, and cantilever and crossover options.
