How to Choose Small Parts Bins: Hopper Front, Shelf, Fiberglass or ESD?

How to Choose Small Parts Bins: Hopper Front, Shelf, Fiberglass or ESD?

Buying Guide of the Week

What's the difference between a hopper front bin and a shelf bin?

A hopper front bin has an open front, so operators reach in without moving the bin, and a rear tab lets it hang on a panel or rail. A shelf bin is enclosed and slides in like a drawer, trading pick speed for more volume and better dust protection.

Is a black bin automatically ESD-safe?

No. Color does nothing for static. A true ESD bin is molded from a static-dissipative compound with a published resistivity rating.

When is fiberglass worth the extra cost?

When heat or chemicals are involved. MFG fiberglass handles -60°F to 250°F continuously and won't melt when a hot part lands in it.

Will my new bins hang on my existing panels?

Not always. Hanging tabs differ by brand, so mixing brands can leave bins that don't seat.

Our full guide also covers sizing to inside dimensions, weight ratings from 10 to 150 lbs, and the costly mistakes we hear about most on quote calls.
