Hallowell Hi-Tech MedSafe open shelving units feature the same welded-steel Hi-Tech construction as the standard 5- and 6-shelf series, with the addition of a platinum antimicrobial powder-coat finish that inhibits bacteria, mold, and mildew on the shelving surface for up to 20 years. This makes the MedSafe series the correct choice for healthcare supply rooms, clinical support areas, laboratories, food service storage, pharmaceutical staging, and any facility where surface contamination is a documented concern, and the shelving itself is part of the infection control program.

Two shelf configurations are available: 8-shelf and 11-shelf in the same 87" overall height, providing tighter inter-shelf spacing and more storage levels than the 5 and 6-shelf Hi-Tech series. All units are 36" or 48" wide with three depth options (12", 18", or 24"). Starter and add-on units are available for each combination to create continuous rows of shelving.

Capacity is 500 pounds per unit for all 36"-wide models, 375 pounds for 48"-wide models at 12" and 18" depths, and 350 pounds for the 48"-wide 24"-deep models. The antimicrobial "-AM" suffix in every model number confirms the MedSafe finish standard. Hi-Tech models without this suffix do not include the antimicrobial treatment.

Selecting the Right Unit:

The 11-shelf configuration provides three additional shelf tiers with reduced inter-shelf clearance compared to the 8-shelf format. Choose the 11-shelf when maximum storage positions per unit are needed, and the stored items are shorter. Choose the 8-shelf when taller supplies or boxed materials need more clearance between shelf levels.

♦ Width, 36" vs. 48", the 36"-wide units (451x prefix) carry 500 lbs per unit at all depths. The 48"-wide units (471x prefix) carry 375 or 350 lbs, depending on depth. Choose 36" wide when higher capacity is needed. Choose 48" wide when a wider shelf surface suits the items being stored, and the lower capacity is adequate.

♦ Depth, 12", 18", or 24", the depth suffix (-12, -18, -24) determines shelf depth. Match depth to the size of supplies being stored and the available floor space in front of the shelving unit.

♦ Starter vs. add-on units, starter units (no "A" prefix) stand alone and begin a row. Add-on units (A-prefix) share uprights with an adjacent unit and cannot stand alone. For a single-unit installation, order a starter unit. For rows of two or more units, order one starter and the remaining units as add-ons.

♦ Model number verification: All MedSafe models end in "-AM." Confirm the "-AM" suffix is present before placing an order to ensure the antimicrobial finish is included. Standard Hi-Tech models without "-AM" are structurally equivalent but do not carry the MedSafe treatment.
