Specialty Racking

Specialty Racking for Bulk, Reel, Bar Stock & CNC Tool Storage

Specialty racking covers storage needs that don't fit standard pallet or cantilever racking: boxed bulk inventory, wire and cable reels, long bar stock, and machine shop tooling. This page groups the racking systems CustomMHS carries for these specific applications, from Hallowell, MECO, and Keneco.

Selection Guide:

♦ Bulk Inventory Storage: Hallowell Bulk Rack Steel Decking (up to 3,800 lb per shelf), Hallowell High Capacity Boltless Rack, or Hallowell Reinforced Bolted Rack
♦ Carton Flow Storage: Keneco Carton Flow Rack System, gravity-flow design for first-in, first-out picking
♦ Reel Storage and Handling: MECO Heavy Duty Reel Rack, or MECO Reel Winders for controlled reel handling
♦ Bar Stock Storage: MECO Horizontal Bar Storage Racks, or MECO Vertical Bar Storage Racks
♦ Modular and Portable Storage: MECO Vertical Storage Rack, MECO Modular Stackable Racks, or MECO Portable Stacking U-Racks
♦ CNC Tool Storage: Mini-Racking, compact racking for tooling near machine work areas

Selecting the Right Type:

♦ Assembly style: choose Boltless racking for fast assembly and reconfiguration, or Bolted racking for maximum rigidity under heavier loads.
♦ Material type: choose Bar Storage Racks for long stock, or Reel Racks and Winders for wire and cable reels.
♦ Space efficiency: choose Vertical configurations to maximize storage density, or modular, stackable, and Portable U-Racks for flexible, space-saving layouts.

Where Commonly Used:

♦ Warehouses and Distribution Centers, bulk rack decking supports organized boxed inventory storage.
♦ Order Fulfillment Operations, carton flow racks support efficient first-in, first-out picking.
♦ Wire and Cable Operations, reel racks and winders support safe, controlled material handling.
♦ Metal Distributors and Machine Shops, bar storage and mini-racking organize long stock and CNC tooling.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is specialty racking?
Specialty racking covers storage that does not fit standard pallet or cantilever systems, including boxed bulk inventory, wire and cable reels, long bar stock, carton flow picking, and machine shop tooling. Each configuration is built around the shape and handling of one material type rather than adapted from general racking. CustomMHS carries the full line of Hallowell, MECO, and Keneco specialty racking, backed by each manufacturer's warranty.
Should I choose boltless or bolted construction?
Assembly and rigidity trade against each other. Boltless racking goes together quickly without hardware and comes apart just as fast, which suits operations that reconfigure storage as inventory changes. Bolted racking adds structural rigidity for heavier loads while still allowing disassembly. Hallowell offers both in high-capacity bulk configurations, and the bulk rack with steel decking supports up to 3,800 pounds per shelf.
Should bar stock be stored horizontally or vertically?
Both MECO options solve the same problem differently. Horizontal bar storage racks lay stock on its side, which keeps ceiling requirements low and makes individual pieces easier to pull without lifting them overhead. Vertical bar storage racks stand stock upright, which uses far less floor space for the same quantity. If floor area is the constraint, go vertical. If handling ease and ceiling height matter more, horizontal is the better fit.
What is the difference between a reel rack and a reel winder?
A reel rack stores reels in organized positions, keeping them off the floor and accessible. A MECO reel winder holds a reel on an axle so cable or wire pays off under control as it is pulled, which is what you need when material is dispensed from the reel rather than just stored. Operations that both store and dispense typically use the rack for inventory and the winder at the work position.
How does specialty racking help your facility?
Matching the rack to the material removes the workarounds that develop when awkward inventory gets forced onto standard racking, such as bar stock leaning in a corner or reels stacked flat where they cannot be pulled from. Organized positions also make inventory countable and reachable without moving three items to get to a fourth. Carton flow racking adds a different gain, feeding cartons forward by gravity so the next unit is always at the pick face and stock rotates first-in, first-out without anyone managing it. And portable stacking U-racks and modular stackable racks give operations that reconfigure regularly a way to add or move storage without rebuilding a fixed system.
