How to Choose Industrial Totes and Containers: The Specs Buyers Miss

How to Choose Industrial Totes and Containers: The Specs Buyers Miss

Buying Guide of the Week: Containers, Totes & Trays

Can a plastic tote go through a hot wash cycle?

Check the rating first. Many HDPE totes are rated only 0°F to 120°F, far below the 250°F autoclave rating common on polypropylene parts bins. This is the most common mismatch we see.

Is a more conductive ESD container better?

No. Static damage is caused by current, and a container that's too conductive can produce a high discharge spike the moment a part touches it. Ask for measured surface resistance in ohms, not just the word "conductive."

What is a nest ratio?

It's how many empty containers fit in the height of one. At 4.0:1, 400 empties store in the space of 100, which saves floor space and return freight.

Why do totes list four different dimensions?

Tapered walls make the top and bottom different sizes. Your part has to fit the inside bottom, which can be several inches smaller than the outside top.

The full guide also covers the two load ratings that decide stack height, how to compare returnable totes to corrugated on cost per trip, and which container fits each application.
