The rating that matters is the one on the drawer, and carts are rated two different ways. Rousseau R-Series carts hold 400 lb per drawer in widths from 24" to 72", and Rousseau L-Series carts hold 100 lb per drawer in 18", 36" and 54" widths. Rousseau does not publish a total cart capacity. Other lines publish cart ratings: a Strong Hold stainless cart is rated 2,000 lb, Jamco YV-Series stainless carts 1,200 lb, and Little Giant 48" mobile cabinets 3,600 lb in all-welded 12 gauge steel. Choose by the heaviest single drawer, not the average load.

Moving a loaded cart depends on its casters. Rousseau lists a 4" caster at 440 lb and a 6" caster at 1,100 lb in polyurethane, in fixed, swivel and swivel with total-lock brake styles, and Strong Hold 5- and 6-drawer carts use 6" x 2" polyurethane casters with brakes. Check the loaded weight against the casters, and allow for the working space: the cart’s depth, plus the drawer projection, plus about 30" of body space. Lock the drawers before moving the cart.

Selecting the Right Model
◆ Drawer rating, choose 400 lb per drawer (Rousseau R-Series) for heavy tooling and 100 lb per drawer (Rousseau L-Series) for lighter parts, based on the heaviest single drawer
◆ Cart capacity, check the published cart rating where one exists (Strong Hold stainless 2,000 lb, Jamco YV-Series 1,200 lb, Little Giant 48" 3,600 lb), since Rousseau lists only the drawer rating
◆ Width, choose from 18" up to 72" by the longest item plus 2", and by the narrowest point on the cart’s route
◆ Casters, check the loaded weight against the caster ratings, and choose a total-lock brake for carts that stay in one spot
◆ Steel or stainless, choose stainless steel for corrosion resistance, and ask the manufacturer in writing which stainless grade is used, since the listings do not publish it
◆ Top and liners, choose a work-surface top (butcher block, rubber mat, galvanized, stainless or marine edge), and PVC or foam liners to protect tools
◆ Locks, choose a key lock, code lock, NFC smartphone lock, padlock hasp, vertical security bar or one-drawer-at-a-time mechanism on Rousseau carts, and a 3-point locking system on Strong Hold carts
◆ Working space, allow for the cart’s depth, the drawer projection and about 30" of body space where the cart will be used
